Keeley Owners

Just wanted to make sure the unit I got for Christmas is operating correctly.

There seems to be a a constant low level noise from the unit in the form of static. Also, when I turn the sustain knob it sounds like a very scratchy pot but once I stop turning, that noise subsides. When I adjust the Level knob, that's when the low level static gets louder and although lower than the guitar sound, it might present a problem when recording.

Do I have a bad unit or is this normal from what others have experienced?

Which keeley, the Compressor I guess.

Doesn,t sound right to me. If you dime the sustain I remember getting a hiss when engaged and not playing.

Don't have one now, simply cos I don't need compression from a pedal.

Best.

Yes, I meant the compressor and thanks for that input. Sounds like I got a bad one.

Ring Rob Keeley up and explain the problem, I'm sure they will advise you, I've found their customer support very good.

eMail or call... excessive noise might be a mistake. At the least you'll know if it's fine or not - at the most, you'll get a replacement or your money back.

I have a Keely 4 knob, when I first used it I notice a kind of wooshy, wiping sound on the sustain pot but I had to rotate it fast and it also was, what I thought was a little noisey .
Called ProGuitar and their sale guy/ tech explained it was a design, component thing that had little to do with performance. After using a Boss C-3 before the Keely wasn't very noisey actually, but I asked if I could try another one (gold top as it turned out), no problem, they had me a new one in 3 days. It sounded exactly the same. I was embarrassed by my perception of an otherwise great compressor and found the way to not make that wooshy sound. . don't rotate the sustain pot so fast . .the overall noise of this comp is what you'd expect when you spank a guitar signal that hard, but with just a nice trim on the peaks, it's pretty quite. I would suggest working with it a little more.

That describes what I am hearing exactly, a wooshing static noise as the knob is turned. It goes away when you stop. There is still a lot of noise though from the level knob i.e. the noise increases with the level increase. After reading how clean sounding the unit is, from other sites, the performance caught me off guard.

Do you use a battery or a 9 Volts power supply???

maybe you could try to power the unit with something different just to see if the noise goes away...

Yeah, thought of that. I took out the battery and went 9 volt. Noise still there. Thanks for that thought however.

How is the sustain and tone?, the noise is there with some of the newer ones, though it seems that yours is really noisey

The sustain and tone are great. No problem there. It sounds amazing on those fronts but the line noise is kind of a non starter and detracts from what sounds like a great unit.

Update..

I called Keeley and they immediately sent out a new unit based on our conversation. Already got the notice that it has shipped. I just got back from sending the old one, so we will see how this turns out. I hope this turns out well because I loved the sound of the unit sans the circuit noise.

Gotta be a bum unit. Mine is brilliant, quiet, transparent. Irreplaceable!

The only problem I have with my Keeley is the writing by the knobs is too small and covered in crud, so I don't know what they do. Mine's not transparent, it's green and it's got a pretty blue light on it.
