It obviously depends on the style of music you play, but a pedal that always sounds good is a Tube Screamer (or imitator). That make things nice n' dirty.

it all depends on what you want. If your looking for an overdrive pedal, I like MXR's GT-OD. Great overdrive pedal that adds some nice crunch to a clean amp. It also works great as a transparent boost. Other nice overdrives are pedals like Fultone's OCD or maybe an MI Audio Blues driver.

Or if you REALLY want to have fun get a Big Muff.
Or a Blue Box. Or an EH HOG. ...or you know, just a wah.

I always used ....
MXR Dyna Comp BBE Green Screamer or a Maxon OD9 (Both Tubscreamer type pedals) Boss TR-2 Tremolo MXR Carbon Copy or a BBE Two Timer Compressor Overdrive Tremolo Delay ....and you should be ready for anything. John

Sweet suggestions! I guess I should have mentioned styles. I like anything from a nice light overdrive, just beyond breakup (like you kind of have to work to make it break up), and also enjoy a screamin' lead tone. I haven't really experimented with any other sort of fuzz or distortion, and also have limited experience with other sorts of pedals. I'm not sure but I've never been much of an effect guy until now, but recently I've been wanting to experiment! I thought maybe a chorus or compressor or something would add something to the sound that I've never heard before.

How about a tremolo pedal? I have a Boss TR-2 and I love it. I think tremolo is an often overlooked effect that can really add a lot to your sound. Sounds great with a tube amp too because it can kind of swell in and out of tube breakup if your settings are just right.

I don't really know much about them, so I've just picked up random bargains to see what they do. My small collection probably wouldn't do much for fussy ears, but they are all fun and work great with the BJr.

My 2 favorite suggestions so far are the Boss TR-2 Tremolo and the EHX Big Muff. In all honesty, I play through a Marshall, so, what works for me may not be as beneficial for you, but those are the 2 pedals I use daily. The TR-2 gives you a pretty impressive range of trem for the money (if found used, I paid about $25 for mine) and the Muff, when fiddled with properly, can actually be pretty mild, and a LOT more versatile than the people who always seem to be demoing them at GC would lead you to believe.

. . . ^^^ what he said ! Blues Jr's take stompboxes very well So it really depends on what type of dirt you want ? Light OD / Heavy Gritty OD / flatt-out Distortion / Light Fuzzy OD / Brick Wall of Fuzz . . . the list goes on ! Any dirt box WILL sound good w a Blues Jr, IF, you like the sound

Do you have a new blues jr with a cream board or an old one with a green board? I used to have an old one and it sounded pretty dark, not very Fender-ey at all. I put a Pro Tone Body Rot II in front of it though and didn't use much gain at all and it upped the highs and made it sound better to me. More classic sounding for rockabilly licks.
Then you just start turning up the gain and it can go from just a little to screaming leads.

My first pedal for my bj was a Boss OS-2. OD and distortion. Though the distortion isn't 'heavy' the OD works great, especially with the FAT switch on! I got it the other day and haven't stopped, much to my wife's chagrin.

I've always been so put off by any sort of any muff fuzz thing mostly because of what puremania said about people "demoing" at guitar center and also on youtube with the super fuzz but it seems like quite a few people use them so maybe I can give one a second thought.
Sirjack - I'd most likely place myself in the first two categories Studio - SWEET MULLETS! haha, I can agree with chorus flangey pedals being a little 80's. |

Honestly, I refused to try ANY fuzz, chorus or flange for the longest time because the people I heard using them always had them close to dimed on every knob...the key is MODERATION IN ALL THINGS.
Just enough of the Muff to growl, just enough chorus to shimmer and just enough flange to...well, I still don't really use flange, but yeah, moderation is key. Not everything needs to be turned to 11

Ugh . . . I hate chorus pedals. But strangely enough I love flanger pedals. I'm weird that way. Having admitted that, my Ibanez FL-9 sounds great through my Blues Jr.

I have to say the Danelectro Transparent OD is perfect for that amp.

I own a blues Jr and have a bad monkey and Marshall Gov'ner 2. For the money the bad monkey is great, its a good mix between a boost and an overdrive. It colors the tone a hair, but i love the way it pushes the amp to 11. The marshall is great if your looking for the marshall tone. It totally transforms the blues jr into a marshall, i definitely recommend it if your ever looking for that sound.
I dont remember how my broken Danelectro cool cat chorus sounded, but mine broke so i dont recommend it. I've been thinking about buying the fender reverb pedal because a lot of people dont like the verb on the blues jr. im content with it, but then again its the only reverb i know. |

I have a TS10 for warm over-drive with a TS7 for the extra boost (don't like it by itself). The GV2 gets used more than I'd like to admit for the bassy, extra crunchy overdrive. |
