Pedal Related Query

I have decided it is time to indulge in a pedal...
Do you think it is better to buy individual pedals or a multi effects pedal???
Please Help!

individual pedals.

if you like the drive pedal, but hate the chorus, you can change it.

you can experiment with drive pedals, delays, modulation, compression, and reverb on an independent scale.

with multi effects pedals, it is all or nothing.

The important questions are:
What are you trying to change about your sound? Is there an artist or artists whose sound you're after? How much do you want to spend?

For control, individual pedals, but be ready to spend $$$. To get approximations of multiple pedals/combination, get an all-in-one unit, like a Pod. The entry level floor Pod is $149.

Individual for me because it's all about analog tone!

I'm in the "Buy Cheap, Buy Twice" camp but our tribe seems to be heavily out numbered

On a similar note what are your opinions on the Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi and the Boss SD-1 Distortion pedal? and which do think you think is better?

The SD-1 is more versatile and will give you a wide range of "standard" distortion tones. The Big Muff is more fun.

do you know much about what all the sounds are about? if not, I'd say buy a line6 m9... play the daylights out of it... and when your tastes get to the point that you can't get something you want out of the m9, you buy individual.. you'd still use the m9 as your grab n go box though...

Which one are you talking about--the DS-1 Distortion, or the SD-1 Overdrive?

If you like fuzz, obviously the Big Muff makes more sense. I have tried and not liked the USA Big Muff or the DS-1 Distortion, but the SD-1 Overdrive was pretty cool as an amp booster for blues, rock, and pop stuff.

Fuzz really is an acquired taste. When I was first learning I hated the Big Muff (never bought one, would always try it in a store). One day I was sitting around listening to Hendrix and thought "gee, I ought to get a Fuzz pedal with the cash burning a hole in my pocket", so I bought a Big Muff with Tone Wicker.

I could spend hours with just that one pedal, and while the Big Muff line of fuzz pedals is viewed as a low-end fuzz pedal, it also sure is cheap. And takes a power supply.

As for your original question: a low end multieffects pedal might be a good start - I had a Korg AX1500G I picked up off eBay for around $100. As I played with it I learned what I liked and what I didn't like about multieffects, and sold it off a year later.

But I like a billion buttons and no menus. In fact, I hate menu diving. I'm of the one knob = one function school of thought, so I'm much happier with a bunch of pedals and knobs and switches than a multi-effects unit. Unfortunately, that means a M13 or M9 by Line 6 will drive me nuts, and I end up spending a ton of money on individual pedals. So be it.
