Leslie Simulator
Hey all,
This may or may not be a question you get all the time. I'm looking for a rotating speaker effect that actually sounds like a leslie. Specifically, I'm talking about that trademarked "Beatles" chorus sound that Harrison used all over Let It Be/Abbey Road, etc. In interviews with them they constantly attribute it to just running the guitar straight through the Leslie. I have the EHX Small Clone, which actually does a decent job when you turn the rate up and the depth down. I was looking at the BBE Mind Bender as well, which a friend of mine has, but it doesn't look like it does much besides the Small Clone. I was also looking at the Soul Vibe by them, or any Univibe pedal for that matter, but though people say is emulates a Leslie, at Univibe is far from the sound I'm looking for. I know that Boss makes a rotary speaker pedal, but I'm looking for something a little less complicated, just a stompbox with a switch or two. Any suggestions? Thanks! I'm playing a parts tele with Bare Knuckle Pickups through a Hot Rod Deluxe if it helps. |

The Arion SCH-Z Chorus is not a great chorus per se, but it does a great job as a Leslie sim. That's exactly what I use it for. It's way better than a lot of the Leslie sims I have tried... think "Badge" by Clapton.... Plus it is very cheap!

Actually I find the Boss RT20 does a very good job at achieving that sound as well as a whole bunch of other sounds. It is less than a Motion Sound cabinet and it does not require movers to lug it from gig to gig. $199.00 new.
Just don't use the "overdrive" it is useless as far as I am concerned.

+1 - been using it for a couple of years. It does the job well. But for the real thing, check out the Leslie G37.

I have a Rotosphere and a Leslie. I have used the rotosphere a lot and it's OK. To record, I ONLY use the leslie. I found the stock 12ax7 way too grainy for my tastes in the roto, so I put in a 12ay7 (I think) and it was better. The roto is good only because it's small and you can use a couple of little amps IMHO. In mono, the roto is good for the audience only to get the feel.

What else would I be comparing a Leslie simulator to? A food processor? I said I like mine and it's useful. Having said that, It cannot compare to a real leslie. I have not found a simulator that can. It's fine for those who don't know or care about the sound of the real thing. I find it uninspiring for the most part, but close enough for gigs and portable.

I love that swirly, swampy Rotovibe effect and thought I'd got it with a Boss V-Wah on Univibe setting but it adds a bit of fizz too........OK with more gain, but not quite.
Just recently bought a Fulltone DV-2 Stereo which is just the sound I'd wanted.........but is so huge (and I believe now being superceded) and megabucks...... Maybe try a Fulltone Mini Dejavibe if you don't need the pedal to change swells. |

The best Leslie simulator I've heard is the old Dynacord CLS22 or 222 (NOT the later DLS digital version). Not ideal for guitar use though as it's a rackmount rather than a pedal. And like all of these things, the effect only sounds convincing when you run it in stereo.

1) Roger Meyer Voodoo Vibe
2) Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe 3) EHX Wiggler 4) H&K Rotosphere 5) Dunlop Uni-Vibe . . . in that order, for me !

Happy w/ mine. I'm running it in stereo through 2 amps (Fender Vibro-King and a Top Hat Club Royale) and use an expression pedal. Nice spread, rich and thick, but it does have some harmonic artifacts with some of my guitars if I'm using a delay---still, they sound good.
