Looking for some reverb any ideas?

Hi folks, I play through an old 72 Garnet Lil Rock head and it doesnt have any built in reverb so Im in need of a nice stomp box reverb. I play an old esquire with a SD Broadcaster in the bridge, I use a Jacques Overtube, a EH Small Stone, a MXR Dyna Comp and a Boss GE7. I play lots of Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Creedence-Fogerty stuff, as well as bluesier Eric Clapton style stuff and other classic rock. Looking for a decent reverb that might compliment my other gear, style and sound. I dont like to over-use any of my other effects, basically I just like the sound of my amp with everything cranked to 10 and controlling my tone with my guitar and my fingers. But I occassionally like to add a little color and great reverb really adds something when its used the right way. Would any of you have any suggestions to offer? Im not made of money and I am on a budget, but Id rather hold out and eventually bite the bullet on something decent if I must instead of buying something cheesy, if I can help it! Thanks folks!

These two, while not cheap, have been getting rave reviews on other sites...

Malekko Spring Chicken

Mr. Springy

I just picked up a used Spring Chicken, which will hopefully arrive by the end of the week. I'll let you know how it is.

I'm sure there are other less expensive ones out there, these are two seem to be very hot right now.

The previous suggestions are spot on. If you were going to bite the bullet than your options are the Fender Reverb Unit RI at $749 U.S. (ouch) or the Gomez "G Spring" for $799 U.S. (double ouch)
http://www.gomezamps.com/g-spring.html

After looking at the prices of those reverb units I think you may want to stick with eaither the Mr. Springy or if board space is important the Spring Chicken.

Get an EHX holy grail.. I really like it - best reverb I've tried!

I know some people have some noise problems with them but I've never experienced that!

maybe when you're going to buy a new one you should look at the EHX Holy grail nano or plus, I guess they could have fixed the noise problems in these new ones?

Just my opinion, of course, but those are one trick ponies...great at what they do, but limited.

Well by going by the original post he sure doesn't need something with a lot of bells and whistles.

To each his own, but for 150 bucks why buy something so limited...I think the Mr. Springgy is 200.

The Tech 21 is just a great pedal...I don't see the tone shaping as bells and whistles...everything is useful and functional...there's no silly reverse or gated or modulated nonsense...plus a 9dB clean boost at the end of your signal if you like is just icing.

Mr. Sprnggy is my vote. nice footprint (slightly wider than a boss style pedal) and does what it's supposed to do. provide a nice reverb. nothing fancy it just does what it does as seamlessly as it can.

try to find someone that has one and give it a test ride. i did and i can't be happier. as far as a one trick pony ... well it's a reverb

Yes...a SPRING reverb emulation...and a good one at that. Not everyone digs a spring reverb for every application.

It truly depends on what you are looking for. That one trick happens to be the best reverb trick in the world, if you love spring reverb. As I do. If you're going outboard, expense and all, go Gomez. The Fender tanks can be really nice with all the proper upgrades ... as new, stock at that price, not worth it.

For outboard spring goodness at (sorta) pedal size, it's the VanAmps Sole Mate. Not cheap either, but way less than the big units. Very high quality tone and build.

If you're looking for other reverb tricks, check out the Dr. Scientist Radical Red Reverberator. No spring setting, but the settings they do have sound perfect. (Digital yes, but so unlike the EH Holy Grail, which sounded great until it failed repeatedly and frustrated the hell out of me. Those I cannot recommend.)

A Hardwire RV 7 ($150) just arrived in the mail to me yesterday to add a little verb to a Champ. After some tweaking it gets the job done fine. The Hall and Room 'verb are useful as well. My use of reverb is pretty subtle so I am not real picky. I hear as above that the Springy and Spring Chicken do a little better spring reverb but cannot verify that. And yes...the 'reverse reverb' is...ridiculous.

In the cheap 'n' digital category, I can recommend the Digitech X-Series Digital Reverb. In operation it's quiet, the Plate/Room/Hall/Church settings are all rather nice, and it has an entertaining Spring Reverb setting (plenty of boink, but maybe not 100% convincing in its execution). Also has Reverse and Gated reverbs, which you may or may not have any use for. The trick with all these seems to be getting the wet/dry blend right...basically, mix in just enough wet to get you what you're after, and don't over'verb it!

Hey, you seem to play exactly the same kind of music I play with my band (CCR, J.Cash, and W.Jennings make up about half of our set-list...)

I personally use the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail - can do subtle reverb, or over-the-top surf-y wet spring reverb-like stuff; I like it better than the real spring reverb in some of the amps I've tried; mine is not noisy at all (some users complain about that - but I make sure I always use the original wall-wart that comes with the pedal); I also like the single large knob on top for controllign the reverb - easy to adjust with your foot while playing...
There's a new version out now, the Holy Grail Plus, don't know how that one compares to the old version!

If you want real spring reverb without totally trashing your budget, the VanAmps Sole-mate might be worth a look, MSRP is $279, and it's a real spring reverb (no tubes, though, but still sounds pretty decent)...

Yeah that Vanamps solemate deal looks pretty cool, I gotta say that EHX Holy Grail seems like a safe bet too even though they probably have their flaws no doubt. Also, that digitech verb seems interesting too, from time to time youll see the scattered pro namedropping them in Guitar Player. I guess Ill go with a solemate and if it turns out they really are as delicate as some people mention them to be I may buy one of the other two as a backup. So damn hard to know what to buy nowadays eh, theres just so much gear out there, it boggles the mind just to browse all the wonderful stuff thats being made. Thanks guys, if you have any other ideas Id sure appreciate it, Im certainly happy with the feedback Ive gotten so far...keep on rockin!

If you want to add that girth and ambience to your sound, I would recommend a great Analog Echo over Reverb. It can be a more versatile effect. And Reverb can end up muddying up your sound.

I use a Chandler Stereo Digital Echo. But, it is a special case. Usually I'd ALWAYS recommend Analog for an Echo. And even some very inexpensive Echo units can work great.

Is there an Effects Loop in the Garnet? I would try running a Reverb through a Loop as well as in line. I usually prefer the Loop for this effect. But, either way can be great. Just different.

I have been looking for a smaller, newer Echo to replace my Chandler. The closest I've tried are the Retro-Sonic Delay/Echo, and the T-Rex. So, you may want to check those out. Unless you can find a Chandler SDE.

HTH.

I was just about placing an order for a DIY Reverb pedal kit to General Guitar Gadget. A ''Digital reverb based on the Belton Reverb Brick"
Anyone have tried this one ?
