Best examples of phase shifter use?
What recordings would you suggest as your favorite example of phase shifter use?
I just picked up an Akai Intelliphase and an Ibanez PH10 and enjoying a little swirl in my sound - would like to hear some samples of shifting in various styles. Thanks! Max

phase shifter examples or Vibe examples
Floyd and Trower used Uni Vibes ... Hendrix too...some Van Halen effects were done with Flanger and some subtle effects with chorus.
Johnny Winter used a phaser heavily in the mid 70s. The entire Captured Live (76?) album is a great example of phaser, Listen to Sweet Papa John or any of those tracks. iggy

As for pure tone from a 'pedal', I guess my benchmark is Steve Howe's bit on "Starship Trooper" with Yes. I think he used the bulky old Maestro phase shifter on that, but I can't swear to it. I think a lot of my faves might actually be old school tape flanging tricks. Are the Doobie Bros' "Listen to the Music" (overall mix treatment) and Led Zeppelin's "Nobody's Fault But Mine" (guitar treatment), as well as Bonham's bits on "Kashmir", examples of tape flanging?
I can't cite any recorded examples, but the Mutron BiPhase [?](the really huge one) from the 70's is the most dimensional sounding phaser in a pedal that I think I've heard. The MoogerFooger phase shifter is really deep as well. I love Waylon's use of phaser in context (perfect for the material), although the phaser tones in and of themselves don't necessarily knock me out. |

Veering off topic a bit, but love the sound of this Phase 45 clone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cLCx_9iw8Y
Nice and subtle, not a retro effect. |

Led Zeppelin-"The Rover"
Big Star-it's all over "#1 Record" 10cc-"Art For Art's Sake" Any 70's era Pink Floyd People confuse "phase shifting" with "tape phasing or flanging". The following are some examples of tape phasing: Led Zeppelin-Kashmir Small Faces-Itchycoo Park Caleb-"Baby, Your Phrasing Is Bad" Jimi Hendrix: "Axis: Bold As Love", the opening to Electric Ladyland And the granddaddy of them all: Toni Fisher's "The Big Hurt" |
