Finally found my dirt/distortion sound--THANKS

Have been obsessed with this forum trying to find the right pedal, and lurking on this board has been a huge help--so thanks all.

I've never been particularly happy with my tubescreamer/various distortion pedal combos, so I decided to take advantage of the generous GC return policy, and generous friends who would lend me boutique pedals and try everything I could for the past six months.

I tried everything I could get my hands on and finally settled on the fulltone fatboost and Fulltone OCD (which oddly was the first thing I wanted to try, but no one had the OCD in NY until recently). I have the fatboost's drive almost all the way up, with gives me a nasty (in a good way) overdriven sound through the clean channel on my BDRI. My band plays pretty loud, so the slight natural break-up on the amp, turned up loud, mixes really well with the fatboost. Mix in the OCD on the LP setting, with the drive a little over half, and I'm getting some great nasty (again in a good way) tones, that still keeps the natural sound of my guitar. I'm still playing with whether like the OCD or FB first in the chain.

Hopefully this will keep me happy for a while. Now I just need a need fuzz to replace my big muff.

Good for you! I'm sort of in the same boat: I really don't like ts808 sounding overdrive, I mean I like it but to me they always sound like a tubescreamer(midrange hump??). I've been looking at a Fulltone OCD as well but the sound clips I hear they sound like a TS...I have to hear one IRL. I'm thinking OCD or Sparkle drive...In the meantime I'm building a Mosfet boost which is a clean boost that should drive my Twin a little harder for some edge (I hope!) and I think I want some kind of rangemaster/beano boost for dirtier dirtness.

BTW on fuzz check BYOC. I have an Ge mkII and it kills. It doesn't clean up like a D*A*M with the 3 0c75s does but its sounds very much like one for a few hundred bucks cheaper.

[never trust people on the internet!] OK, so I added an MI Audio Crunch Box to the dirt chain, and now, hot D&#n, slightly dirty, pretty dirty, and Marshall stacked out from my Tele. NOW, I've found my dirt sound.

My bud has the fatboost waiting for me. He changes his board up almost monthly, so he offered it to me for $100. I can't wait to try it.

My main board has, an original 82' TS9, a fuzz that I built and a Seymour Pickup booster. Not to mention, early 80's crybaby, 83' Boss DM-3 analog delay, modded Dynacomp and the trusty TU-2 Tuner.
I like the current board, but for my stripped down country gigs I need a smaller setup board.
I plan on using my old Boss CS-3 Compressor that I modded, Fulltone fatboost, and some sort of delay/reverb pedal.

Just hope some $$$ drops in my empty hands pretty soon.

The Fulltone Fat Boost is a tweaked AMZ Mosfet Booster...

Still not sure if having these three boxes is excessive, but after one day with all of them, I'm having a blast.

Twangbanger--enjoy the fatboost. It's a great little pedal.

The best way to hit that Twin with brass knuckles in order to make it go into overdrive is with a slave, or attenuator.
A twin has an immense amount of naturally built in Midrange, and it stays really clean until you get up into the ear bleeding range of volumes.....
Why all of the TS hate? especially an 808?.. haha... and midrange? I don;t get that with my 808's that tone control works as more of a mid control. The ts9 is definately more gritty and buzzy to my ears, and the TS5 is IMO the closest to the 808 at least to me anyway... but good choice in boxes you have there. Have you ever tried a Boss OD3? they seem to get alot of good reviews, also I have an old arion Stereo overdrive which is a really unique overdrive box, it is very punchy and smooth, whereas an 808 is more clear and less boomy. I use a dod fx10 to hit a small amp and it's great, try one of those with a twin it's probablly cool.
Also and don't flame me for this but if you have a chance run 2 tube screamers set like this and both on.
volume full, tone to your liking, and gain off... it's maybe the best glowing sound ever especially with any amos around 12 to 20 watts. I've used that setup with a deluxe and a soundman literally thanked me after a gig.... haha.....
I get lots of compliments from soundmen I have never played with though, and I use a Music master bass amp or a fender cham cranked up to about 5 or 6 or so.....I use small amps because I'm really lazy and I have a small car. The deluxe was puching it for me and I sold a peavey classic 50 because it nearly killed me one night as we gracefull fell down a flight of stairs together in a spiraling dance of gravitational death......
