Barber Tone Press - country chicken pickin'?

I've spent quite a while searching this site for compressor reviews/threads, and I see that the Barber is very often recommended because of its ability to do the blend thing and yield a more subtle compression effect. What I didn't see is whether or not it's capable of the more pronounced compression that is used for the typical chicken pickin' stuff. Can it do this with the blend 'off'?

sure, you can give it as much or as little comp as you like -- with the blend knob, it's easy to dial in the "sweet spot" -- even onstage. positively the most versatile comp i've ever used!

There's a trimpot inside the box that can be adjusted for more of a traditional compressor feel (more squashed)....

I was once a Tone Press user. Ended up selling it. Recently revisited the world of compressors with a Diamond Compressor...and what a sweet pedal. Much better than the TP, even with the TP having a blend knob. It can go from subtle compression to full on squash. Well, not as much as a DynaComp would provide....but enough for some nice chicken pickn' tones.

I use a Carl Martin and a Tone Press. Either one will produce enough squash to sound like a yard bird.
Remember though that if you use it on stage and you are miked, check your tone through the mains.
I found that what I felt was appropriate for the stage with compression was WAY overboard when it was coming through the mains.

because you can't mix the compressed and uncompressed (direct) signals. the Blend control of the TP is what sets it apart. i'm sure there are other units out now that do that, but the TP was the first one i discovered, and it found a permanent place on my board.

I have decide to get either A barber Tone Press or A Diamond Compressor, or the new one that Brent Mason is using, made by Brian Wampler

Got my sig customized

Just got an e-mail from a mod, I had a Bible verse removed from my sig that had been there since I joined last Dec, I didn't mean to offend anyone, but it was a short verse, nobody ever mentioned it, they said that it was a proseliteing verse. (excuse spelling) I better not say anything else or I'll be banned, love the stomp box forum, I have the same verse on my HCAG sig and no one has ever said anything

Just wondering whether anyone else has noticed their Tone Press sounding different if running on the battery rather than mains power?

I was fiddling about today and dug out my old Marshall compressor and was trying to decide whether to sell it or not and was A/B'ing it with the Barber so I was using batteries in both pedals. I had to play with the settings on the Barber to get it to sound the same as it did when plugged into my pedalboard mains supply.

The Barber's a much nicer pedal with more transparency and it doesn't give the same exagerated snap at the start of each note that some settings on the Marshall do. The Marshall is also a bit noisier.

But having said that, the Marshall is a well made robust pedal that is a lot cheaper than the Tone Press and I intend to keep it as it can do some of the more extreme compression tones that the Barber can't do (which is why I like the Barber so much - it just enhances your tone and doesn't add its own sonic signature to yours).

Has anyone ever tried the Guyatone ST-2 Compressor/Sustainer? I read some pretty good reviews on Harmony Central...can anyone here offer any feedback?

The Guyatone ST is excellent, I found it better, than anything in that price range, I didn't try the Marshall Compressor which I hear lots of good stuff about.Had a guyatone for a couple of years. I love the Barber ,is a great comp, but am not sure if I'm going to keep it, it compresses well, but it doesn't give a lot of sustain. probably nothing better for the money
