Carl Martin Surf Trem, Demeter TRM-1 Tremulator, or the Seymour Duncan SFX-07 Shape Shifter....all are better than the TR-2...I have owned a TR-2 for four years, and it just feels lifeless. If you're willing to pay a bit more I'd recommend the Catalinbread Semaphore. It's the best one on the market for the price, imo.

+1 For the money, it's hard to beat the Danelectro Tuna Melt. Many here would agree.

I've used a BOSS TR-2 for a long while now. The older ones do have a volume drop, which aint too bad and there's some mods online to fix that.
Doesn't sound lifeless to me at all, but I'm sure there are better and more expensive ones out there if you're really trying to get a lot of bang for buck. |

I just got a Carl Martin Surf Trem and in my opinion it can't be beat. Very rich trem, and a quiet well made pedal as well.

Another +1 for Tuna Melt. It, like the Twang King neck PU, is something I can't resist putting in a good word. And like the Twang King, the Dano has remained a gig faithful for a good 8 years...
I played a carl martin trem o' vibe that sounded good too, but only at store volumes. Voodoo Labs was good, as was a FullTone Supa-Trem, but none had enough "WOW!" factor to displace the tuna melt. |

I use a couple, a Fulltone Supa-Trem and a Toneczar Powergide (which sounds amazing). The Fulltone "halves" the speed via a stomp switch, and the Toneczar has two channels with independently selectable speeds. I've always been on the lookout for an analog that can do swampy to helicopter chop, but with accurate tap tempo.

+3 on the Tuna Melt as well, best deal on the market for that sound. If you're handy, you can also put together your own pedal for decently small coin. Look up some of the DYI threads on this forum...

I went on a hunt for a good trem a while back and tried a lot of them. I decided that the best bang for my buck was the Line 6 Tap Tremolo.
It's got every adjustment and option you could want in a trem pedal, including a switch to use a Blackfacey-type optical circuit or a tweedy and Marhally-type bias vary circuit. It's incredibly easy to tweak, too. I wish I could dial in a little boost with this thing, but I've got a Bad Bob to do that, I guess. They seem to go for around $70 on the used market or around $110 new.

The Dano TunaMelt makes a great trem sound for a very low price - but unfortunately, mine has a very noticeable volume drop when switching it on, and I find the trem speed knob very hard to set precisely, because it is so tiny for the wide range it covers...
THE BEST trem pedal I ever tried was the Voodoo Labs Tremolo - as soon as I've got some spare money, I'm gonna get one of those! Currently I use a George Dennis GD125 - that's both a volume pedal and a tremolo pedal (you can switch between the two functions) - nice trem sound, but not as warm as the two others I mentioned, and when it is switched to trem mode, you can hear a low, throbbing noise in the background when not playing (just like on "real" trems on Fender amps...); vol. pedal function is one of the best around (better than eg. Morley vol. pedals), and when switching to trem, you can control the trem deoth with the vol. pedal, very useful! Can be found on German Ebay for around 50 new. |

TR-2 Keeley modified...
Maybe go to Keeleyelectronics.com and check this pedal with mod out. I have one and I think it's great. It is clear and quiet, plus it has a mod that allows you to set the volume. Bonus---you can use it as a clean boost as well.

I have a Marshall Vibrotrem pedal and it works pretty well for me.

I use the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Plulsar and like it real well.
Didn't do a lot of comparision shopping before I bought it, but it does basic tremolo real well, plus more. I think I paid around $90.00. |

I did a lot of digging and it seems that the 2 feature rich trems (the ones that take you the full spectrum from the swamp to the techno freak out) are the Cusak Tap-a-whirl and the Empress (well there are the others like the 4ms and goatlabs, but good luck getting one of those). The Cusak has no rate knob, which is a huge deal breaker for me. But it is by all accounts a great trem and does have some very nice features that even the Empress doesn't have, but i HAVE to have a rate knob or expression in cause i am all about the ramping. So my trem to end all trems is the Empress. It is great for straight up swamp throbble and then it has some crazy fun stuff. It does a great chop trem it hold 2 speeds and lets you ramp up or down to them and it has sine, square and triangle. All three sound killer. And then it has all of these wonderful rhythms where it hits the first throb harder and subsequent throbs less hard to give you an metrical hierarchy add an autowah or a gate after this and it just gets out of control silly fun. I love this trem and it has been on my board for 2 years now. Steve is an amazing guy and he is upgrading my trem now with the second LED that indicates the rate (I have an early model, the new ones all have these upgrades) and giving me a few other upgrades and something custom and cool that is my little dream come true that no other trem has (I actually have a long list of holy grail trem features all mocked up in a MaxMSP patch that would be the tremolo box to end all tremolo boxes). I use all this stuff.... and i run my synth through this as well. But even if i didn't i would still sing the praises of this box, cause it is gig solid (mine has been to Korea, Taiwan, and Japan), backed by a great company, and does the straight up trem very very well. Not everyone needs all this, but i do. Killer box. I got it when it first came out for under 2 bills. One of the very few boutique extravagances i allowed myself and it has been tweaked prolly a hundred gigs and is all over my last 2 cds. One of my very favorite pedals ever. MY dream is to work with Steve on an Empress II. But i just love this trem. I highly recommend it. I bet his delay is the shizzle too. -kevin |

+1, a lot of times I use the trem just for solos in ballads, so it's nice to be able to set the volume of the engaged trem higher than unity.

And way too expensive for what he is looking for.

I don't know about "the best" trem, but I am using a Mojo hand Sugar Baby ($149) for Fender type sounds and a Catalinbread Valcoder ($139) for choppier sounds and I am very pleased with both. Both have internal trim pots for volume adjustment.

kp8--u2 But oh what fun! And usable in other contexts. But that's not what he asked for, is it? I apologize for wasting the thread.

The PN-2 is great cause it does auto pan and it also does a really good square wave trem and it also does slow very well. I tried to get Joel Terry to part with one.... hehe... but i was a day late and a dollar short as usual... Unfortunately the PN-2 is getting hard to find and expensive. But if you find one on the cheap it does an amazing slow chop!
