Auto Wah suggestions?
or should i say envelope follower pedals?
i've had a few decent ones but they seemed to favor higher output pickups. i'm mainly running lower output pickups these days and need a pedal that will work well with the lower signal level. MF is blowing out the DOD @ about 30 bucks... any thoughts?

Some ideas...
Ibanez AF-9. Chuck Prophet uses one, with a Squire Tele, and gets great tones. They're somewhat prized (no longer made), but pop up, from time to time. From my experience, all the 9-series Ibanez pedals were great. Maxon makes a clone of it and it's readily available. The Boss Auto Wah might be a bit cheaper ($), but Boss pedals are usually pretty reliable for performance.
I've never had any luck (or like) of DOD pedals (just my own experience, mind you). I'm sure there are some boutique pedals, too, if the $ky is the limit. |

I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but I've been having fun with an E-H Tube Zipper. They're pretty pricey, but I managed to get a good deal on a used one. You can get the funky auto wah sounds, plus some really crazy noises.

I have 2
of the pedals mentioned, the boss autowah and the ibanez af9.
They are not really similiar in that the autowah is just that,an autowah, which it does really well. The ibanez af9 is more of an auto filter kind of like a mutron III. They're both great, I've considered dumping my traditional wah pedal entirely because of the boss. I just don't "wah" that much, and when I do, it tends to be on rythym tracks and you can dial in a nice feel on the boss. Try 'em out. |

No question about it
If you just want a kick butt auto-wah, get the MXR Auto-Q. This thing is AWESOME. I had a bunch of the alternatives and nothing touches this for a pure auto-wah.
I also have the Digitech X-series evelope filter. This is considerably more flexible than the MXR so I end up using it more. http://www.digitech.com/products/synthwah.htm In my rack I have the Line 6 Filter Pro. This thing is even better than the Digitech but it's more complex to use. http://www.line6.com/productpage.asp?productID=43 If all you want is auto-wah, I highly recommend the MXR pedal. The Digitech and Line6 are excellent alternatives with much more flexibility and wonderful tones. |

I haven't tried the latest batch but own many of the older ones. My favorite is the EH mini Q-tron. Its not exactly like a Mutron, but IMHO comes extremely close. Nice wet and drippy vowel sounds. The mini only does the up wah tones, but I never used the down wah much. My only unhappiness is that its too large. For rhythm work I like the Guyatone Wah rocker.
