One is distortion and and the other is overdrive.
The DS-1 can make you sound more metal-Marshalley. The BM is a tube simulator. I like the bass knob. There are a few modes I can use with a lot of bass on the BM and heavily driving the amp gives me a liquid sound. I have both!

if your looking for a natural break break up go with the overdrive. If you want the somethat just scrambles the signal go with the distortion. If your looking at cheap pedals consider the ibanez ts7 tubescreamer same guts as the ts9!

It sounds like you need to go to the local music store and spend some time with the almighty Boss tree! Many fine folks here lean towards the OD-3 over all the others. I've yet to try one - they're never in stock wherever I go. I bought an SD-1 Super Overdrive, and I kinda like it. A buddy picked up the Blues Driver, and I liked it too. I seemed to remember liking the DS-1 a whole lot less than the others that I've named. They are all just different flavors, and it's all a matter of personal preference.
I STILL haven't tried a Bad Monkey yet, so I can't comment there.

I had the Bad Monkey.
While I loved the Bad Monkey, and highly recommend it, it doesn't have the "oomph" I'm looking for whenever I play electric guitar...
Now I also have the Boss DS1, which is what I was looking for. But being caught up in the pedal "mod" craze, I thought I'd try to get it done... I'm glad I did. I love my DS1 even more...after the mod was done. |

An alternative to the DS-1 from the Digitech family would be the Hot Head. It actually sounds pretty good and is cheaper than the DS-1.
