Fuzz Pedal Redux...

ho- self proclaimed fuzz pedal NUT here -

i've found lots of great fuzzes that do perverse things to the upper registers, give varying degrees of octave overtones, have their own signature EQ...

BUT howzabout this -

what fuzz have you played that completely disintegrates the bottom end, as in totally obliterates it?

that is what i'm currently looking for - the 'loosest' fuzz on planet earth.

like i said, i've found plenty that go insane with the upper end buzz. i want to dismantle those lower frequencies.

don't ask why. i just want to. i'm not even sure myself...

what kinda disease is this that i have?

This ones pretty crazy...

Check it out... some real SPLAT happening here - check out the clip. The Playing's not great but it gives you the general idea of the Fuzz...

super splat...

whoa!

John - that sounds like some bad caps i just replaced in an amp!

gave me an idea too. i've got another amp w/a bad cap in the treble circuit. notes decay semi-normally and then are cut off in a fizzy distorted manner similar to those in that audio clip -

if i can come up with a pedal that replicates what my misbehaving amp is doing, and make it more noticable, i could have a neat little stomp box.

but i guess what i'm really looking for is a fuzz that goes heavy on intermodulation on the low end, something that is typically REMOVED from pedal designs. it then stands to reason if i modify a pedal to pre boost the low end then i could get some interesting results. i use the word interesting loosely...

i think the pedal i've heard that comes closest to this is the MXR Blue Box. that pedal would be a good starting point, but i don't want the octave down effect.

does Vexx make anything that does this?

The Guyatone TZ-2 'The Fuzz'. It's one of their mini pedals - it has no low end whatsoever, just nasty high mids and highs with some upper octave effect. Serious trashy garage tone. Check it out.

Hey, talk to Dan at 4MS(formerly 3MS)...

This guy was pretty cool from what I remember... He has a pedal called the "Fuzz Jade" which won't match what you want, but he makes each pedal and will mod it however you want... he may have already done something like what you want, or maybe can steer you in a good direction on a DIY... check it out and send him an email at:

http://www.4mspedals.com/

Funny you mention that about bad caps... one of the coolest sounding amps I EVER gigged was a rented beat to sh*t SF Deluxe reverb that had some caps dying... it was normal except when I played aggressively... the clipping that was going on when I really hammered out a chord was to die for. Let us know what you end up with... and if you got any good mods for whacking out a Dunlop wah/vol pedal let me know!(actually I'm gonna ask Dan at 4MS about this to)

just shot Dan...

...an email. we'll see what he sez. i've also had a few ideas go off in the old noggin - after i try some things with my soldering iron i will post results.

as for wah/volume mods, i think it would be fun to play around with different cap and inductor values, and to jumper the 2 effects together. if the effects are jumpered, it might be cool/wierd to invert the wah, i.e. more volume = less treble.

but whoa - that sound file still has me thinking. i'd really like some touch sensitive fuzzes, sorta like an envelope follower, but the harder you whack the strings the more 'bzzzzzzztttt' you get.

i think i'm gonna have some fun this weekend...

Here's another interesting approach to fuzz:
