Not trying to hijack, but I have an older tubescreamer that I've used for quite a while and definitley notice that when turned on, my tone is totally changed. Is there an od pedal that is under $100 or so that gets a simular type overdrive but gives you your original tone with overdrive added to it instead of changing the tonal caracteristics of your guitar? If I had the money, I'd go for a Sex Drive or something along that line. I like the wampler Hotwired pedal for Brent Mason alot, but there again is the affordability.

I've been checking out some pedals in the store in the meantime.
remember: the goal is to get the sound of an overdriven (fender) amp in a small box. I tried them with a fender hot rod deluxe and later with tweed deluxe and cranked this up as a reference from time to time and with a fame gta 15 (the stores brand, a pro junior clone from russia for € 222) which has a nice dynamic crunch, too
z.vex box of rock - nice and dynamic, too marshall for my taste anyway the best I tried so far, the boost comes in handy - if the overdrive would be modelled from a fender amp I would have bought this right away.
ibanez ts 7 - thin and comressed sounding, makes the sound small IMO
mxr gt-od - not too bad (better than the ibanez) but still feels compressed and small compared to the real thing - anyway one of the best and a likely candidate for a real life test.
fulltone OCD - more dynamic, slightly synthetic, tone feels smaller with than without
fulltone fulldrive: OK, but not really there. too much options for me and way too big and expensive

OK, this was all in the store, so this little benchmark is not a real life test (remember my original post, I borrowed a ts 808 and with a twin and my trusty telly was happy)

Only after leaving the store I remembered that boss came out with models of bassman and deluxe amps recently. maybe this will get me there?
Anybody tried them?

Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive.

It's based on the Tubescreamer, but allows you to blend your clean signal in with the OD to your taste. With the "clean" knob all the way to the left, it acts simply as a clean boost - all the way to the right and it's a straight tubescreamer OD. Anywhere in-between is a mix of the two, to varying degrees.

I haven't tried one yet, and they don't make them anymore, but if you can find a used Snarling Dawgs Tweedy Dog, that is what they are designed to sound like. You can usually find them on Ebay for $50 or less, and if it doesn't work for you, you can resell it without loosing much if any.

I looked for a long time for the right OD pedal. Most of them are just too much. And I would have to use them dialed way down. I used the Nobels OD-1 for a few years. And it wasn't bad. But, I was still looking. Last year I got a Clark Gainster. And have been pretty happy with it so far. I also bought a Bad Bob booster as well. Good luck. It's always hard to find the sound that is inside your head.

i got to say i spend thousands of dollars on pedals; boutiques, modified, ect., and my bad monkey pedal sounds the best! It has the most natural sound with my tweed deluxe amp.

the bad monkey is the type of pedal that really shines with a high gain, low watt tube amp.

I'd suggest Digitech's Bad Monkey!

My favorite so far is Paul Cochrane's "Timmy" pedal. The reason I like it is because unlike just about every overdrive I've tried, there is NO mid hump, nor do you lose lows or highs (which was the design goal). Really nice pedal.
