How to get Gary Moores delay sound?
I was listening to Gary Moores album Old New Ballads Blues a few times with headphones. I know he plays both Telecasters and Les Pauls on this and various amps - like Cornell amplifiers and the usual Marshall.
Still overall the guitarsound has a certain wide and big special feel on every song. I do not know if what I mean is delay or reverb and what kind. It reminds me of ZZ Top's guitarsound on Blue Jean Blues. Does anyone know which delay, reverb or compressor he used on those songs? Please let's not get into the old it's-all-in-the-fingers-thread. |

winny pooh; If I sounded like Gary Moore I would get some delay buy throwing my amp off a cliff while playing and get some delay as its falling. Then shortly after I would not delay in throwing myself off the cliff also.
You ROCK pooh! LOL bigtime, Dave |

Not that he isn't a hell of a guitarist (a little more metal influenced than I prefer, but surely he's very skilled), but that tone never spoke to me. Sorry not to provide any real answers.

God bless Gary Moore! I love his tone. It's not my tone, but it's a beautiful tone,
To answer Simon's question, to the best of my ability... I'm pretty certain he uses stereo delays, sometimes in ping=pong, other times set up with slightly different delay times for each side.

Pooh, I see you have Tom Waits in your avatar - good choice. Well I love many styles and tones and find interest in many different ways to approach music. When I was young I also loved dogmatically points of view, but in the end: how boring.

From a guitar player interview :
Guitars: Gibson X-plorer, Gibson Gary Moore Signature Les Paul Standard (loaded with Tom Holmes humbuckers). Amplifiers: Two Marshall DSL100s, each powering a single Marshall 1960BX 4x12 cab loaded with Celestion G12-75T speakers. FX: DOD Supra Distortion, DOD Death Metal Distortion, DOD Mystic Blues Overdrive, Ibanez Chorus, Ibanez Delay III, Ibanez TS-10 Tube Screamer, Dunlop JH-1 wah, custom-built switching box (changes the DSL100’s channels and turns the amplifier’s reverb on and off). Strings: Dean Markley Nickel Steel Electrics (.010, .013, .017, .030, .042, .052.) PS Whinney ....... Out of any guitarist that I can think of in recent times , Gary has probably had the widest variation in recorded tones , and most of them had guitarists everywhere licking their lips .... except one

Flat357 - that is great information. I am surprised. Always thought the DOD pedals were considered being of lower quality. I will look into them now.
The Ibanez III delay you list looks interesting. Looks like a pedal that might be hard to find though. Thank you Tony, did not know about the Echoplex. Just read that surprisingly he recorded often with a Stratocaster rather than with a Les Paul. |

He uses a Supra-Distortion. That's one of the worst boxes ever. If he can get a decent sound out of it, he's a better man then I.

Don't go rushing out buying those pedals just yet lol , as though I find no reason to think the info was flawed , it's not like Gary told me himself

The last time I saw Gary was a few years ago , at the Manchester academy .
He was rediculously loud , and I ended up listening from afar , in the bar . I'm talking seriously loud . I felt like having a serious chat with the soundman .
