What is a good aggressive compressor?

AnalogMan comp or any "Orange Squeezer" style comp is my preference for "aggressive compressor".
A.Man makes both a Ross clone and a juicer (also a 2 in 1 unit). The Keeley comps can get pretty aggressive too depending on how you set it. There are internal trim pots that will affect it's 'aggressiveness', though I believe you can get one that has all the controls on the top of the pedal. The older MXR dyna comps would squash pretty well too. |

I have used both of those, Analogman's mini bicomp, well, was a pretty good compressor, but not what I would call a squasher, Keeley's 2 knob has incredible tone and does give the needed compression, maybe I should put a boost or overdrive before the comp
Thanks Jim PS-looking for something over the top for Southern rock

Guit30-I would buy either the Keeley 4 knob or a Carl Martin.
I happen to own a CM and I love it. It is basically a studio comp in a pedal. Does the job.

Gil,
Yes, I did a shoot out betweeen a Keeley and Homebrew CPR, I love comps, wondering if there was some that get a more aggressive type sound than say a Keeley which I think is very musical and just a great sound enhancer Jim

If you can find one, the Boss CS1. I got to try one once, and it had the most aggressive squash of any comp I've tried. The CS3 can get pretty squishy too (albeit quite noisy).
Later...

I'm thinking of one that gives you a strong signal change, not transparent

The Marshall ED-1 or a Boss CS3 or a DOD Milkbox (all affordable and all good).
You need an Attack Speed knob and you have to crank it. You need the squish right at the start of every note. I like the squish when I use a compressor....I have to have the Attack knob.

i've owned a boss cs-2, boss cs-3, and a keeley. the keeley is by far my favorite and most mild. the cs-2 is a little more squishy, and then the cs-3 is the most squishy......i think brent mason type squash.

Believe it or not I have tried many boutique comps, but have stayed away from the Boss CS3, have a friend who has a Maxon pro 9 series, loves it, He is a guitar tech for a Nashville sideman.
Jim -Should I try a Boss or DOD Milk, I used a Keeley 2knob for a month to review, great tonally, missed having to send it back, They sent me a 4 knob, didn't like it, not as strong, brighter, not as squishy as a 2 knob. Jim

I wouldn't have described the Barber Tone Press as ever likely to provide maximum squish in comparison to other comps. It's a very versatile pedal but in a more subtle manner than other comps I've used.
I have a Marshall ED 1 comp and that does heavy squish but with a lot of noise. |

Thanks for input, The Diamond samples sounded pretty transparent, though good, it is optical, which usually are not that hot, but good quality
J PS- I was reccommended the Barber by someone as just being plain good

The Diamond 'can' be uncolored sounding, and I think that that's what's perceived as "most desirable" in a comp.
I was definitely able to get it to distort and be very non-transparent. I'm sure the sound samples are going after the widest potential market. |

Wait - "aggressive compressor"..."I'm thinking of one that gives you a strong signal change, not transparent"
Maybe I'm getting the semantics confused, but "aggressive" and "compressor" to me are opposites in musical terms. A compressor wipes out the attack and aggressiveness fo your right hand. It removes the dynamics. So an "aggressive" one would do a great job of...well, being a right-hand crutch and a generator of weak tone is about all I can come up with. So are you actually saying you want a compressor that does the best job of removing your attack and dynamics? I'd risk asking why, but I doubt I even want to know, since that's one of my definitions of bad tone. Just get any $30 Chinese stompbox, turn the knobs up all the way, and there you go - no attack, no dynamics, one volume level no matter how you play, lots of sustain, with a flatlined average frequency response. Goal Achieved. OK, I can't resist - why? Or please explain how I misinterpreted it...because it sounds like the goal is everything I've tried to teach students NOT to do for 30+ years, no matter what style.

Maybe aggressive is the wrong word, I really like The keeley comp, and several others, just was wondering what others thought did the best job in
dynamic definition, Keeley's idea of putting your Rhythmn OD in front of your comp makes sense Best Jim
