Tube Works Tube Driver

I just got a new Tube Works Tube Driver Reissue. It's the original Butler design and sounds really good.

I'm usually of the school "tubes go in amps, not pedals", and I usually prefer a single "Tone" control to seperate Hi and Lo eq, but this pedal is an exception.

On the lower gain settings, very tube screamer-ish, but you can tweek the highs without affecting the lows and vice versa.

On the higher gain settings, very much like an old JTM45, cranked all the way up. Smooth bottom end.

It plays well with my Teles and Strats. For $89 new - I can certainly recommend that you try it out.

Would you consider this to be

A booster type pedal, a distorsion...what? I am looking for a boost pedal and I'm researching a number that I hear about on this site. Actually, I've heard about so many I am confused :-)

When we talk about "boost pedals" around here, I think there are two different schools of thought that most people come from. (1) Purely a volume boost which does not change the tone any, and (2) a tube screamer type boost that gives a little more volume and gain (therefore, more sustain).

A couple of my favorite pure volume boost pedals are the Fulltone Fatboost and the lesser expensive Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. For the option (2) any tube screamer will do.

The Tube Driver is more of an overdrive pedal. I'm getting tones from Eric Johnson to David Gilmour, even to Billy Gibbons. Good, smooth, overdrive.

12AU7 mod

Sorry to butt in on your thread, but for my .02 worth, changing the 12AX7 to a 12AU7 gets rid of the buzzy high gain end of the control range and gives much more control over the expressive overdrive end of the range.
