I have two pretty weird ones:
I, too, have the Alesis BITRMAN that kingnimrod posted back in this thread.
The other box is a Mobius, an endless looper - it takes whatever effect(s) you have plugged into it and loops it back on itself, over and over. Needless to say, that leads to some VERY far-out weirdness.

I dont use many...but here is a picture of almost my current board..still changing things ...I plug right into my amp more often than not...but the weirdest thing Ive used on any regular basis is that little green box in the corner..the digitech synth wah...for Jerry Garcia-esque mu-tron type auto wah sounds....does a surprisingly good job.

thats a 1977 New York Small Stone there too..kind of cool.

Could we get a Tambourine vs. Squawking Owl cage match to the death?

I think that would be sort of like pitting Simon and Garfunkel against Grand Funk Railroad.

The "Owl" ,homemade by me around 1972, consists of a variety of 1970s effects and some homemade electronics that were changed out along the way. It has a homemade regulated power supply and you have to appreciate the frugal nature of the design using an old Vacuum Cleaner power cord. The case was handmade and took me 4 hours to make out of plywood, hardware, cut out with a circular saw, and painted. The S.O. box itself was this steel chassis with no bottom. I had to make the bottom out of a piece of plywood with sheet metal cut and attached. Shielded coax was used to run the inputs/outputs. The hardest part is doing lettering. These were the days when they were like decals that you would rub on from waxed paper. And then I clear coated it like 10 times!

Inside you have 70s Electo Harmonix Big Muff Pi(Fuzz), Electric Mistress (Flanger), Small Stone (Phase Shift); Octave Multiplexer. Notice that the Big Muff has a special selector switch, with cap switching, that suppresses the distortion to make it less "fuzzy". Also there is a "fuzz before phase" or "phase before fuzz" switch, that flips the order of the two making two distinctive sounds. Fuzz before phase gives a deep swirling phase, and the other gives a more subtle blend (which I prefer).

Originally I had a cheesy lowpass and highpass filter that wasn't used often. But then, years prior, I found this great circuit for a "Guitar Tone Enhancer" in Popular Electronics (of all places). A simple circuit but well designed. In addition, I modified the gain section so it would overdrive. Originally I had this in a small box with a jack that could plug directly into the guitar (I still have that one). So I decided to build a second one and put it in the Owl.

Lastly, I used an Echoplex years ago and needed a local bypass footswitch, so I added one with an extra jack.

The things that need fixing: The Octavizer went out so I bought another one but I've yet to swap it out. The power supply needs updating to a more modern quieter one. I might change the Flanger out with a Flange/Chorus.

I always hated old fashioned klunker switches. Half of them would 'pop' the circuit. I always wanted to switch it to FET circuits that would be silent with some quiet action foot switches. AND, the bending to adjust the tones was always pretty silly. I'd rather have a lengthy cable to the footswitches and the knobs up high at around stomach height (maybe on a music or mic stand affair).

Gee I wonder if I can still find the wiring diagram? Maybe I'll follow through and redo the whole thing some day.
That's damn impressive. I think we have a winner!

Do auto wahs, like the Digitech or the EHX Q-tron, work well with Teles? I have heard great things about these pedals, but I have heard some mutterings that they do not produce their best sounds out of a Tele. Does anyone use these with Teles to a good degree of satisfaction? If so, I'm getting one of these things.

You gotta expand on that one! (And I mean no words above the knobs and no words in the details!)

Is this a "name that pedal" test?

As the owner of the Tambourine, I can confidently say that even the plywood case that the Squawking Owl sits in could destroy my humble little Mississippi Drum Machine....

Thanks for the tip CatfishStudios. I'll head out this weekend to a/b the EHX Q-tron and the Digitech model. Then I'll have to learn Estimated Prophet, Shakedown Street, and the Dead's version of Dancin' in the Street (think 1st set closer - Cornell 1977). Wah on.

I forgot about that one! I also have one that crapped out on me. I can only use the presets now...so I don't even use it anymore.

As for my gear, the "weirdest" pedals I use are my dynacomp, crybaby, and digidelay...I just don't know how to use it "properly.

Tonefactor Ultralord

Just sold a couple pedals and scored this (mint & pretty darned cheap too) with the paypal i saved up. I have wanted one a while now. This is a total meltdown pedal -- a hide the children, buildings loosing pieces of brick type pedal. I love it so far. It is totally evil.

Pat.
OK, what does a Coron Space Machine actually do? And isn't the Dimension IV an oil can echo or something else?

Just remember never ever use the Boost! It's not musical, it's just noisy bad.

I had one of those back in the '70's. Only I did use the boost. Sweeping the wah with all the hiss from the boost was perfect for that waves on the sea shore sound that we used at the beginning of "Wooden Ships" and an original called "Ocean Song." Our bass player was able to rub on the strings in a way that sounded like the ropes from the dock to a ship stretching.

It's modern, inexpensive & quirky: the Ibanez PM-7 Phase Modulator. Does standard phase sounds, a square-wave phase & hi-frequency modulation which can sound a lot like a ring-modulator. Excellent little noise-box!
