Looking for a new phaser....
I have your basic run of the mill Phase 90, and I like the way it sounds, but I don't like its bypass. So it sits in a TB loop with a few other pedals. I basically use a little phase here and there depending on my mood...
I'm gradually going to do away with everything that's not TB (not the topic of discussion here) and do an overhaul of my pedalboard. Before I pose this one to TGP, I figured you guys are more on my level. I'm thinking about going with a Red Witch Moon Phaser OR a Retro-Sonic Phaser. I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with those or if they'd want to recommend something else. I've seen all the videos and clips online, I'm just wondering if anyone has any opinions or feelings on these (or others) in the real world. Thanks!

If you're the least bit handy with a soldering iron, I'd recommend the BYOC phaser. Tonewise and feature-wise, it's in the same ilk as the Retro Sonic, but you'll save a bit of $$$.
I built mine a little over a year ago, and it has been a mainstay on my pedalboard ever since. Later...

I've got a Red Witch Moon Phaser and think it's a great pedal.
Extremely versatile cos it's not just a phaser but also has settings for tremolo and a unique tremo-phase setting. You can get everything from univibe settings, rotary speaker, to almost helicopter tremolo out of this pedal. Very well made and looks like it will stand the test of time. I've had mine for 2 years now and never had a problem - touch wood that this will continue for years to come. Although, if anything did happen I live not far from where they're made so it wouldn't be the end of the world for me!! |

Del...
Thanks for the comment on the Moon Phaser... A question for you, how much do you like the trem on this pedal. I use quite a bit more trem than phaser and if I could retired a second pedal off the board, it might help me justify the higher price. Thanks...

There are sound clips for the moon phase here. This is just the pedal I've been looking for and they're made right here in the next village down the coast. Talk about a small world.

BrutherBill,
I've read reviews which have suggested that some folk don't think the tremolo settings on the Moonphaser are particularly good but I think that they're perfectly fine and pretty versatile. I have a DRRI which again I find has some very nice settings but again some folk find this less than satisfactory. So maybe I'm not critical enough of gear and any limitations it may have but being able to compare the Moon Phaser with the DRRI I think it's just as versatile (I also have an old Marshall Vibratrem pedal which I thought was pretty good on the trem settings - particularly at the price level). At the end of the day, the Moon Phaser is, as I said before, a very versatile pedal. I bought it primarily as a Univibe clone to give me some rotary-like tones and it does this very well. So, that together with phaser and tremolo options all in the one medium sized metal box is not bad going! And it's very well built as well. |

Phase 45 (more atmospheric phaser than the 90) If you don't like the bypass, a new switch is easier than building a clone.
The first series DODs are also very good phasers. I like the red 401, but theyre all nice in their own way.. |
