Polyurethane over tolex/vinyl?
I have an amp that has an awesome head cab made by a friend of mine down in Memphis. Love the sound/looks of her, but I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the material he wrapped it in isn't too robust and has started to flake off in some areas. I want to try finishing over the vinyl to protect it but I am not 100% poly is the way to go.

WOW that's a loud amp ! In a bright red sport coat sort'a way.
That reminds me I need to go to the drycleaner. My thoughts with painting it would be the poly peeling and maybe the solvents bubbling or lifting the tolex. |

Hmmm....Well, I know at the store that I work in we have a couple of amps that were done in tweed and then varnished. They seem to be pretty solid, but the varnish they used definitely colored the amp quite a bit. Turned the tweed into a nasty, (but in a good way) tobacco brown. I don't really want that look for this amp for obvious reasons. I just know the second I take her out on the road I am going to run into problems. The guy that build the amp said I got the very last bit of this material he had left and he was fairly certain that it would be next to impossible to find (sucks because I really wanted my 2x12 wrapped in it ). I guess it is either give the poly a shot or invest in a world class amp case and just baby the hell out of the amp...

Tweed is not tolex. Tweed is more like cloth and tolex is more like plastic or some synthetic stuff anyway.
(ok they do make tweed tolex but we'll just forget that for now) Follow Stingrays wise words and try it. |
