Wanted: Cheap, Lightweight Chassis and Box

Where can I get a cheap, lightweight box and chassis for a 12" speaker?

I don't want to build something, or do a lot of soldering. I just want to stick this vintage 12" Jensen I have in it, connect a head, and rock.

The lighter the better- I don't care if that means fiberboard or whatever.

Just a thought...unsolicited.....if I were looking for a cabinet in which to put a vintage JEnsen...or any speaker, really....I am looking for a solid cab. A thin fiberboard cab doesn't allow a speaker to yield its best sonic results. Thick fiberboard...MDF....can make a decent cab. TEh only time I would be looking for a thini fiberboard cab would be if I were trying to emulate the cheap Danelectro/Silvertone cab sonics. 'Light' doesn't mean good sonics when it comes to amplification.
Also, you aren't really looking for a chassis, either, are you? You are wanting a speaker cab...or an empty amp cab, right?

Avatar sells some very inexpensive speaker cabs, ime.

I think Cheap, Lightweight, and Not Building Something are mutually exclusive things. Cheap would generally mean you go with an MDF cab. MDF is heavy. Solid line will be the lightest you will find ready made, but will not likely be cheap. Your best bet may be to look for an old combo amp cabinet someone is selling on ebay or craig's list. I have an old Peavey Studio Pro cab that is lightweight and I got it cheap. Actually I bought the working amp and sold the chassis on ebay for nearly what I bought the whole amp for. But then I had to replace the baffle with one that filled the gap . . . and that's "building something".

A cake pan and a corrugated cardboard box will be about as light and cheap as it gets.

But seriously, you might want to look for objects at garage sales that are the same size and shape as an amplifier. May be a wooden laundry hamper or tool case, or some type of utility cabinet. An old Hi Fi speaker can be converted into a cab and the hole will already be cut for the speaker.

Thanks, guys. Wally, you're right- I said chassis, but what I really meant was just that I want the necessary electronics included in it- I want a box with the plugs and hookups already installed- everything but the speaker.

As for cheap and lightweight, I know it won't sound as good as a nice pine box, but I have to carry it to gigs on the subway and the last time I carried a small combo amp I threw my back out for the next week.

I was hoping there might be something on the market already, as I have too many other projects to realistically get around to making anything.

Are there any boxes of any price and weight available? Where would I look?

What you need to search for is a used combo amp that needs it's speaker replaced. that will lower the price. If it's less weight that you require, then maybe a solid state Mustang type of amp will work for you. I have a II and I have to put a paperweight on it to keep it from tipping over every time the air conditioner turns on.

Yes, that. But not completely empty- I want the connectors.

But it sounds like such a thing is not easily found....

i would buy a cheap non- working combo amp and remove the electronics ... Crate and Peavey cabs are solid enough ...

Ok, it looks like a cheap combo is the way to go. Empty 1-12" cabs start at $90 on ebay. I guess I'll start scanning CL for a broken Line 6- shouldn't be too hard to find!
