5E3 SUPER Layout

Maybe it's a crazy idea, but for my own 5E3 build I started making a SUPER layout, that identifies the stages, and components. I have one A3 size (about 2X Letter Size) that has a lot of my scribbles and erasures and mistakes, etc. I am doing this for posterity, and I might make another 5E3 someday, and maybe tweak a bit.

So here's a start, and I want to ask for confirmation, discussion and any additions you may think would be good for this noob and future noobs.

(I will be creating my own layout as I go, so as not to infringe on copyrights)

Nah! I already have that! What I want to do is show *how* things work, how signal flows, what affects what, etc. Ceriatone's layout IS pretty, but the only information is the component name. (and I'm not sure that Nik Azam would appreciate me adding to his layout!) I guess 'primer' expresses my purpose.

Charisjapan, that's great! More than many DIY newbs do. You can remove those question marks. There are lots more little sections. Those 3 little 100k resistors are called plate resistors.
Maybe muchxs, Celeste, or one of the many other veterans around here can fill in.

Also, imo, don't create your own layout when you have this. Just don't add a Fender badge to your amp :) Make a new layout if you're reading from the schematic and using a different turret board or terminal strips.

Here's an awesome book
(A Desktop Reference of Hip Vintage Amps)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0964106000
It has lots of schems and tips etc. All the Fenders have the schematic above the layout, so you can learn to read them.

Andy,

Thanks for the book intro. I was surprised to find that Amazon Japan has this in stock! I'm going to have to wait 'til next month (billing cycle shuffle), but I'll certainly get this. I'm still digesting Dave Hunter's book, which helped me to discern the stages and start labeling some of the specific functions. I have quite a few more written on my scribble version. Thanks for the confirmation on the power rail and grid stoppers.

I know that I have to learn a lot more of this stuff, but I hate learning the same thing twice (or 3 or 4 times! ). That's why I want to make a nice, clean (readable ) layout that folks can print out. I know it's kind of a 'cheat-sheet' kind of thing, but hey!

This will take some time to finalize, probably longer than this particular build. But yeah, I'm hoping to get input from all you good folks, and hope not to cause a ruckus.

Another thing I realized, after converting to jpeg, all the details went fuzzy. I guess for the illustration-challenged (like me) I will have to leave it in bitmap or learn vector... I guess it stays in bitmap. :P 'tsOK, Paint got a lot better in Win7.

Start with the P1 theory document at AX84

http://www.ax84.com/p1.html

That will get you started with the first stages (voltage amplification triodes) The rest of that amp is a single ended output stage (useful info but not particular to your amp.)

So then you can go to Merlin's site and read about it in further detail, and also about the cathodyne phase inverter and the push-pull output stage. Tube rectification and the basics of the power supply will then round out the whole package.

Keyser Soze,

Thanks for the sites! I've already read most of the ax84 manuals (not that I retained everything ), and it's been a lot of help. But that's the problem: retention. This project is just a huge Postit! I went over the ValveWizard site and see a lot more to spend time on. Sadly, I'm finding that building is relatively quick, but learning is another matter altogether. But I persevere!

Question

Looking over things in general, I notice that there is a 1.5K grid-stopper on the two power valves. Fender's layout shows the resistors between pins 5 and 6, and then from pin 6 to the coupling caps. The schematic ignores pin 6, I'm assuming because it isn't connected to anything. Is this just as a firm tab to keep the resistor from flopping around?

On my first kit, a Vibro Champ, the input grid-stoppers were just attached to the jacks and Y-ed together, the 5E3 has turrets for them. Generally speaking, the 5E3 seems to be more durable amp!

Thanks,
