Deluxe Reverb Build

Since I find myself in a standstill on my current 6G15 project the most reasonable thing to do is to start plotting out a course for my NEXT project!

A Deluxe Reverb's been high on my list and i think i'm comfortable enough to take it on now. It's got a fair bit more going on than the Tweeds i've been building that's for sure.

I've spent a little time over the last week looking around at options and wanted to get your guys' opinions. I build a 5E3 in the standard 1x12 combo form a while ago and really love it. I've never built a blackface Fender but have played them several times, including the Deluxe Reverb in what seems to be the standard 1x12 combo configuration.

I'm considering going with a 2x10 - maybe as a combo, maybe as a head/extension cab. From reading around the 2x10 sounds like a good option for that amp, subtly different from the 1x12 - but the only real appeal to it for me right now is that i have a 1x12 with my 5E3 and want to mix it up a little.

Any advice, or pros/cons you can offer on this configuration? Or any good speaker recommendations? In my Deluxe i've got a Weber 12A125 that i really like. I like Weber and would probably stick with them for this build unless there's a strong reason to look elsewhere.

I'm going to try to get this sorted while i'm waiting for parts to arrive for my reverb unit so i can hopefully start building towards the end of May.

You mentioned living in the city. If space is an issue build a head! A deluxe reverb head is a thing of beauty! But if your going cab I say mix it up with 2 x 10"
Would love it if u documented your sources and junk especially if you find good part deals. I wanna make one some day too!!

*edit* I'm reminded now of how much trouble folks are having with hum in a reverb head, I'm sure with excellent lead dress and placing it can be done, but that could be one argument for a combo*

I played a DR 2X10 combo that sounded really great.
Don't know what kind of speakers he had in it.

I went 2x12 with my DRRI. After I got it I found a SFDR and then a BFDR, so I decided to do something different with my DRRI. About the size of a Super Reverb with Marshall Green Tolex.

DR is one of my favorites & so is a 2 x 10 layout. I run 2 x 10 on my bassman or a 1 x 15 or sometimes both.

Hi birddog, which speakers do you use in your 2x10 extension?

Since i'm missing parts for my reverb build and i'm going to be away for a week or so i think i'm going to try to get some stuff ordered for this build. gotta keep the momentum going you know? :D

Any caution on hum induction on this amp in a head format? it looks like the head has been a popular option for a long time so i'm guessing the biggest thing is to use a known good layout and pay close attention to lead dress, something i've found to be imperative in all of my builds so far.

I run Emi Ragin Cajin's. Tried em and like em. They are 8ohm's and my bassman requires 4ohms so it worked.
Isn't a DR 8ohm, you may have to make some adjustments or use a multi tap OT???

Has anyone's used the Mojo Deluxe Reverb kit before? I'm considering using that - or at least using their chassis, and i really like their cabinets. I like sourcing the parts myself but this is will be a relatively expensive build compared to the others i've done so i'm trying to see what'll make the most sense without over-spending.

Anything to look out for on a build like this? I'm pretty sure i'm going to go with a head and 2x10 extension. The OT secondary is (well, most likely will be) an 8 ohm winding.

If your using a Mojotone kit, check if they have the transformers in stock....they think 90 days is a fair time to wait for one on back order. Expect to be knocking down the B+ as the secondary on the PT is 354V which will give you problems if you want to have the voltages as per spec. Don't use their drawings supplied as it's full of mistakes, source your own schematics and photos of original amps and other peoples builds. So you know the circuit inside and out. Check the board and check it two or three times more it's all correct before you install it, you don't want to be be pulling it out with everything wired up for some stupid little slip up. Colour coordinate the wires so you know where they go, especially to the pots. Follow the original design for grounding as close as possible.

I'm currently in the middle of a Weber DR build, (I don't get in a hurry to finish!) I bought their complete kit including cab. The big disapointment was the chassis drilling. There are holes where they don't need to be, and no holes where they should be, I'm not sure why. I've changed a few components, and made turret boards, but mainly using parts supplied with the kit. The boards are done, and everything is mounted, just need to wire it up!
