I think we've decided to take a road trip and lay the money down for the Cannabis Rex for both our 1x12" Trinity builds...figured that if I don't like the tonal qualities I can roll and smoke the cone and go buy something else....Stpehen from Trinity Amps is the Canadian Distributor for Tone Tubby, and he seems to think the $300 12" Alnico is a pretty sweet match in these 5E3 Tweeds

The C-rex sounds fantastic in my 5E3 build. Celestion Blue and a Greenback did not. I think the choice of OT is what makes or breaks a speaker more than the circuit itself.

I was looking at the Celestion Rocket 50 12 inch speakers for around 40.00 shipped to my front door. The reviews seem favorable. I will need maybe 5-6 of these, so cost plays a pretty important role in my decision.

I prefer an Alnico mag speaker over the ceramic for the briliant clean and sweeter drive, IHO.

As many great reviews that the Blue has and seems ro continue to get, just goes to show that not everyone has the same set of ears...I think the jury had decided that it'll be the C-rex that makes it way home in the back seat for the initial test run..

An original P-12N or a Weber Blue Dog.

I put the Rocket 50 in my Marshall 18W TMB clone...excellent speaker. I don't know why anyone would spend more money on another speaker.

For playing out my favorite is the Jensen Neo. Efficient, lightweight and tightens up the bass just right.

well we took the drive to Waterloo to get our speakers of choice which turned out to be the dealers hands down best seller in the Eminence lineup which is the 12" Cannibis Rex....got it home and hooked it up and tried it for a few minutes and it works but once I get the bugs worked out of this new 5E3 build, i'll give it a real test then..Besides, for the $91.19 it cost, I figure I can get 2 more of something else for the cost of coming home with 1 Alnico..

I've got a Crex on the way too. I'm gonna give it a try in my external cab. My 5E3 is modified a bit from stock, it's a tad brighter (used .022uf caps throughout). I think the Jensen Jet Falcon also has hemp cones, I have one of those too. So I'll have good set of speakers to compare: Jet Falcon 12 50w, Cannibis Rex, and a Emi Legend 125.

well good luck with the test runs....I found that so far the bass is some boomin on the low end strings with this new build and someone mentioned about changing a coupling cap (i think ) to lighten things up on that end...wow it's a powerful amp the little that i've messed with it though

Thinking of trying a Scumback after hearing this.

I have heard good things about that speaker. I hope it works well with your build.

How would a Celestion Greenback sound with a 5e3?

I'll be using a C-Rex tonight at rehearsal. It's definitely darker in character than the Emi Legend 125. I feel like the Legend would cut through more in a band setting. Some describe the highs on the C-Rex as "smokey". I'm not enamored of adjectives like that to describe tone, but in this case, I think it fits.

I tried a C-Rex in mine and never got the "smokey" thing. Mine had spikey highs, seemed to be missing something in the lower treble range, and tubby bass. I gave it plenty of break in time but it didn't help much. The Jensen Neo for me was very even toned. It's funny how differently we hear things...

+1 on the Celestion Blue, takes away the flub of a Jenson (newer ceramic versions) and add's some spank!

Last night I used my 5E3 at rehearsal. Put a solid 3.5 hours on it. I took my external cab (ax84 plan, with open back) loaded with a C. Rex. I was worried that the C. Rex would be too dark, as it seemed that way at home at home-level volumes. At rehearsal though, it sounded huge. Lot of bottom end, but tight, and the highs were nice. I even had to use the tone knob to knock a little edge off of them. I was really pleased with the amp and speaker tonight. The C. Rex will be staying in. I look forward to breaking it in .

The C-rex just gets better and better as it breaks in. The hemp fibers are stronger so it takes a lot longer to loosen up than a paper cone.

I never got the "smokey" thing either. These light weight hemp cones are very responsive.

Glad you liked it commodore.. I didn't know what to expect either until I got into that hall tuesday night, and I couldn't find anything that didn't appeal to my ears...I read so many reviews before deciding on it, and was going to go with an Alnico, but I thought for a 1/3 of the cost I'll try one out and I'm glad I did..should only get sweeter with time..
