weber 5e3 head pics

i finished a weber 5e3 kit a month or so ago and am really loving it. the sound is fantastic -- huge yet detailed, great chime if wanted, great dirt if wanted. i paired it with a cannabis rex in a cab built based on the ax84 plans. this amp made my pro junior sound so anemic that i sold it.

i'm really pleased with the quality of the kit (i didn't get tubes from weber) -- i'm sure it's going to be a great amp for a long time.

i was asked by another member for some pics so you could see the back open. since there aren't many heads out there, i thought i'd share with everyone.

the back doesn't seem ideal -- seems like there should be some way for heat to escape from the top -- but i haven't had any problems (although i am a light user -- the amp is never on for more than a hour at a time). i may make another back with a matching cutout on the top.

enjoy!

Congrats on a great looking amp. You've made a 1955 circuit into a modern looking amp with that cab. Is there a single Cannis Rex 12" 8 ohm speaker in the cab?

Nice. That would be cooler with a vent in the top. Air would flow from the back opening through the top vent. In any case, you could put some foil under the tubes and heat your lunch. Just Kidding. It is a very nice looking rig. Pretty work.

Looks super clean. Good work on tolexing the corners.
You can still make a tweed deluxe cab too and just drop it in :)

Are you wondering why you made it so tall? No biggie, it looks like nice workmanship. I'd be so lucky to pull that off.

I like the Marshall-mount for a tweed chassis.

Thanks much, I needed that!! What a clean head inside and out. I too like the Marshall style mount, gives easy access and an un-tweed look. I appreciate the open back shot!! Would you mind telling me what the dimensions are? Have you had any issues with heat from the tubes?

yeah, i know -- it was intentional. i do like black tolex with the fender grille cloth!

after having tolexed with black, i can't possibly image trying to align tweed!

are you talking about the cabinet for the amp? it actually came with the kit from weber, so you get what you get . . . my guess is that they were trying to keep things simple and have a head cab that would work for multiple kits.

it actually look very nice with the speaker cab, i think.

the dimensions are 20"w x 9"h x 9"d. i haven't had issues with heat from the tubes, but remember that i'm just a hack and don't gig with it. i can tell you that the top of the opening for the tubes in the back gets warm (not hot) and the extra glue on the inside seems to get sticky.

after the amount of time it took me to tolex the speaker cab, i'm not sure its worth my while to make these things. a lot of it had to do with the glue i used -- it took way too long to cure, so the apply the glue, wait, wait, wait, apply the tolex drove me crazy.

yes, exactly right. the speaker sounds really nice, but the bottom end is almost too much. of course, i do have it in a corner and use it in a basement room . . . i'm sure someone who gigs with it would appreciate the bass in a larger room.

I, too, built a AX84 cab for my 5E3(ish) build. The AX84 cab is super bassy if you keep the panels on the back. Try pulling one of them off. I used a Jensen Jet Falcon in mine.

Changing coupling capacitors from .10uF to .022uF cuts the boominess in a big way. especially the first two caps.

It is easy to swap out those first two caps to try it.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but when you're placing an amp in a head cab like that, is it safe practice to have the tubes lying horizontally? I've only ever seen tubes sitting vertically, either hanging down or sitting on top of the chassis.

With retainers on all the tubes like he's doing here, I dont think it's a problem.

I've read that some tubes require a particular orientation, but the tubes in a 5E3 can operate at any orientation.

Ditto 5F6A.

The 6L6 can lay out horizontal also.
