Output transformer compatibility
Hi,
I am thinking about building a first amp project as a total beginner. I have a Mercury Mag OT intended for a Fender Blues Jr, and I favor 2xEL84s for a potential simple first project. Is there any simple way to determine/define what type of circuit would be suitable with that transformer? I realise this could be too broad a question for a simple answer, but I wondered if it might be as simple as "kits based on XYZ or ABC would be OK..."? Thanks... |

Any amp with 2 EL84s or 2 6V6s (in push-pull) will work with that OT. So, you have, for example: Vox AC15, Fender Deluxe (any era), Fender Princeton (BF), numerous Gibson amps, Marshall 18-watter, Matchless Lightning ... the list goes on and on. Even the first (rare) blonde Fender Tremolux used EL84s.
There's a lot more to how an amp sounds than just the power tubes used, though, so you should be thinking about what you are after. YOu can find an EL84-based amp for just about any style you want. steven
