I love that old Chestnut. In West Virginia, there was quite a bit of it available, but it sold for a premium after folks started gutting old barns in the 90's and selling it as reclaimed lumber.

If you do want to cinch it down tight, you can put the washers and nuts on the backside of the electrosocket.

What type of Acrylic? There are water based Acrylics, Acrylic Enamels, Acrylic Lacquer, and more.

Compatibility between most modern finishes is a trial and error process. It sucks, I know.

Paint Thinner is a form of petroleum distillates like Naptha or Mineral spirits. Colortone/Transtint is not intended for use in oil based products.

Those metal things on the front of the headstock are called Bushings. They are press fit, and do not screw or bolt down. They simply fit snuggly into the hole. You can remove them by pushing them out...
