Anybody using MOTU 8pre

Is this really 16 in 12 out? Anybody using it on a mac?

I was about to pop for a different unit and saw this one for 550.00 and thought.... pretty good quality for that price!

Opinions my brethren?

MOTU makes good stuff. That thing looks pretty cool, and I think it probably has a lot of different capabilities. Definitely 8 mic/line in, looks like it can take and/or send stuff a few different ways, works with other devices like digital mixers, can handle 16 tracks of MIDI.

Being a simple kinda guy, I'd probably use it as an 8-channel firewire imput device...

Cheers, Tim

Tim, we are of like mind... It would be great to get to 12 then I could sorta isolate drums and get some good isolate scratch vocals as well...

I think I'm gonna get it... they have always been high quality....

thanks for the input...

I do think that MOTU makes killer gear. I don't think the 8pre lives up to the hype in terms of ins and outs. As near as I can tell, without extra hardware/converters, the 8pre is an 8-in, 2-out. There just aren't any more analog holes on the box than that. Two of 'em would give you 16 pres, but you wouldn't have enough outputs to much outboard interfacing. I'd rather go with a couple of UltraLites and get a 16-channel Allen and Heath or something for pres. That way I'd have all the ins and outs I could want, and the potential to mix out-of-the-box too.

This is all a dream, of course. I have no space to record a full band, nor the budget. I've got a friend with a studio if I want to do that. It doesn't stop me from dreaming, however.

A lot of the high-end studio guys laugh at MOTU gear, but there was a thread over on ProSoundweb awhile back where someone blind A/Bd a MOTU interface with an Apogee, and nearly everyone chose the MOTU clip for sound quality, assuming that the MOTU clip was the Apogee. They were gracious in their error.
