Show us your studio

I'm always interested to see what people's studios look like. Attached is a photo of mine. I use a Mac G5, a Digidesign 002 (on top of the rack), a Capybara workstation (bottom of the rack), Mackie 1402 mixer, and Blue Sky speakers. The Capybara is used for working in the spectral domain--meaning I work directly with the partials of sounds.

This one's NOT mine but....

I found this page while looking for studio furniture configurations. Pretty interesting to see the different set-ups.

I'd post a pic of mine if I was that far along, almost there.

mine's so puny now, there's not much to look at. here it is in all its humble glory -- the key element being the all-important Lava Lite in the upper right corner.

we're getting ready to convert the garage into a studio space -- hopefully i'll be able to expand then.

I KNEW I was missing something!

And we were just looking at the lava-lites our last trip to the big city. Just didn't click.

Great photos Doc,
Those pictures really struck me. Massive amounts of gear from wall to wall, and than controlling the bulk of it, a tiny Presonus Firebox which can't be any more than 6"x4"x2" and a laptop. Wow really puts things in perspective.

How do your wives let you get away with having your own room? I had to negotiate. I gave my wife a spare bedroom and a sunroom in exchange for a finished attic. It works for me, since I have a lot of space and a bathroom. But it would get awfully hot until I finally installed a dedicated central air unit. But now my toes get cold in the summer. Life is hard, I know.

Mine is not finished (really not started) but my wife suggested it. She told me to take our living room 15' x 33' and wall off about 15' x 8' for "our music stuff" ...lol. I balked at first realizing no serious soundproofing would happen, but I realized it would be something and that's better than nothing. I've got most of the "studio stuff" bought, I just need the wall up, and i can start putting it together...

Ha! Well for those who are skilled at this it probably does not do much for them. I tend to try to play (though not well) and recording is something to work with it a bit.

My wife actually is the one who wanted me to have a room. I was taking up too much of the house otherwise. Two rooms would be better though as I could use a booth!

That Firebox is a pretty powerful interface, if you get or have the equipment to do it try routing through your digital input. I've done this with my Boss GT 8 and I'm a SPDIF convert now. Really blew me away the quality of the signal.

Anyway one of these days I'll post a pic of mine, I don't have enough outboard gear to make it look fancy, everything is right In the box.

Now that's the ultimate home studio. Awesome Bete. I want mine to look like that too but the only thing I have that's similar is the computer chair mine's more like Grigg's minus the big white magic baseball mic.

Nice Tim. looks like you've poured a slab and are doing a whole room add on that way? also kinda looks like a converted garage though....

i cannot decide whether to add on a 'studio' room, build a separate 'studio' out back(i have a big, fenced yard), or convert my garage and then add a barn/garage on the other side of the house.

i've also considered having one of those pre-fab barn/shed things dropped on my back lawn....and sort of modify that.....add insulation, secure doors/windows...run elecdtric, etc...

a 10x20 can be had for 1600 or so locally. that might be a good cheap way to get going

The horror, the horror...

I've considered my beroom a studio for creating art, long before I started recording there

As a good friend owns and operates a nice studio, I don't feel the need to accumulate too much more than I have - even though I want to.

My humble corner of the universe - note Lava Lamp on bookshelf. The monitors are placed low, but I slouch a lot...

Guitar world, right next door.

My humble mic collection. The only thing I really want to add to it is a nice SM-7 and maybe a Beyer M88... and a Beyer 201.

And a U87...

How about my makeshift recording set-up in the can?

Sorry... but I thought somebody here might be at least mildly amused.

It's an addition to the house, we're adding a sunroom on the back (actually converting a screened-in porch) and a bedroom and garage. The garage is insulated, and will be heated and air-conditioned and will be the band practice/recording studio. We're only having it built as a garage so that I can convert it back to a garage someday if we sell the place (garages are worth more than studios to real estate types!).

Cheers, Tim

Nice!

Tim, I'm very envious of your new construction. Please keep us posted on that.... photo updates would be awesome. Are you doing anything in particular for soundproofing and sound treatment within the room?

Best of luck!

Hey StuH lol.
At least you've got your priorities straight. It was years before I had a real chair.

Don't be fooled by a couple of small fuzzy photos; what you see is this end of 12 pretty intense years on the electronic music roller coaster.
I spent a lot of that time working in pretty harsh enviroments on sagging plywood/sawhorse tables and any other fairly level space available.

What you see is certainly not "state of the art" and is optimized for sound design and creating sound textures and soundscapes; probably not so desirable for live recording. But everything works well together and I'm darned lucky to have it.

You know what? I can tell. I'm jelous too. I've spent a good deal of time learning how to reproduce existing sound, live and recorded, and I'm far from done, but you reach right in and build sounds from the ground up. I may know what every knob on the ol' Midas Heritage does, but I'm still cowed by modular synths.

Anywhere we could maybe hear some of your work?

It's quite interesting Bete. Sometimes electronica and synth music in general is under appreciated. Everytime i play it it sounds like a one hit wonder from the early 80ies.

I see lots of keyboards etc... in your studio but is your stuff done with softsynths?

StuH - I use many sound sources. Analog keyboards, lots of raw sound-
field recordinds, found sound etc. Hardware and software samplers and yes, I do have a ton of softsynths; but use Reaktor and Vaz2 modular the most.

I'm not a keyboard player (all those black and white thingies are just input keys to me) so i use some type of sequencer to trigger modules.
I seldom use anything directly, meaning I usually record into wavelab while working knobs and sliders then snip, clip, slice, dice, layer and reassemble,
maybe put the results into a sampler for another round or import into Cubase5.1 which I use as a main assembly area.

**********
I'm feeling like this thread is taking a hard left turn from the original topic,
so I'm going to take a step back now. Maybe there should be a new thread on the use and abuse of sound sources.

**********
I'd really like to see some more workspaces - especially the creative and raw ones.

I got my jam room done a couple of weeks ago and finally took some pictures.
Looking in from the door:

The other side:

Mission Control:

Finally, the Java Blue Fan Club, these guys love my jams! Then again, they've been drinking Duff!

Got some recordings on my myspace page.
