I think my parents bought it as a military surplus. The thing weighed a ton and we left it in my room in the basement when we moved. But it was great.

After the first three pics, you'll find my practice space/recording studio that I share with a friend/bandmate. It gets a bit messy when a whole band is miked up, but such is the life when the tracking room is also the mixing rooom.

the Auroras made a HUGE difference - even using it's clock made a huge difference when mixing other people's stuff

I have a pair of vintage API 312s - and a pair of vintage Neves that Brent Averill racked for me. Also a single vintage Trident A-Range pre which is killer - and then a UA pair and a Sytek when I just need more inputs. Compressors are a distressor , an 1176 , and a bunch of DBX 160xts.. Thats about it - I used to have a lot more but I've gotten really good w/ plug-ins and I mix so many outside projects, it's makes recall simple

I DO still use some outboard analog delays and older Lexicon verbs on almost every mix but those i/os are fixed in my patchbay and so all the recalls come back perfect

When I stepped up to the HD rig ( along w/ the Auroras and a new Mac Pro ) - the differnce in my work (coming from a 002 and Rosetta ) was simply staggering !!

all of a sudden , it was all about "the music". No computer issues - no error messages - it was the best thing I ever did. It also got me a LOT more work

I can't believe how NEAT and organized some of the studio area's are, I am jealous ! Anyway, you haven't lived until you got up and tripped over a cord and knocked everything down ! Now, all that being said, all my inspiration comes from that vintage Beer bottle sitting on the top shelf "PRIOR" beer. Going forward I am in big trouble though ,I have a new PC, 21" Monitor , Cakewalk Sonar, some Interfaces and a bunch of other stuff. Now I just have to figure out how to squeeze all that stuff into my space without disturbing the Beer Bottle.

Wow, there's some really sweet setups here! Here is my humble recording space.
The view coming thru the door. Not much to look at but the room treatment on the wall.

The control area. Peavey PV8 mixer ran to the sound card of my PC running Cakewalk Home Studio 2004. Most of my effects come from plugins, except for reverb on the amp.

There is sound treatment on both sides of the mix area as well

Vocals are recorded thru an old ('80's) Oktava MK319 condenser. The panel to the right can be moved and placed behind the mic when recording vocals, or anywhere else some additional sound absorption is needed. The strat body on the left is a work in progress.

The bass trap. Since the room is only 8'X10', there is only room for one.

The plywood Cort bass has recently been replaced with this. When I got it it was in pieces and the finish had been removed using what looked like a soldering iron, so I refinished it and put it back together.

Electric guitar is usually recorded with an MXL 990 or the Oktava, depending what fits the song.

And of course, the guitars

My setup is quite modest... Its in the 3rd space in my garage, so its rather small, too...
I'm currently running Magix Music Studio on a PC. It seems to me this app is rather unknown, but I really like it. Anyone else use it???

We got Fostex 16 track with a CD burner that we dump to a laptop
Various cheap condenser, a couple of sm57's, art tube preamps, etc
of and a beer fridge. More than enough for our modest talent level, but it is so much fun

Don't laugh. It looks like a rig that a ghetto teenager would have in the 70's, but I like the simplicity and I get some surprisingly great recordings!

62' AVRI tele --> Princeton Reverb Reissue --> Shure SM57 --> Tascam 424mkIII.

Maybe it's my computer illiteracy, but I downloaded some digital recording software, but after hours of trying could not get a remotely decent sound, while I have consistently impressed friends with this analog setup - probably due to low expectations!

Sure, mudbean! All my vocals are recorded through it. Follow the link below:

Be forwarned, this is modern worship music, so if you don't want to hear that, don't go there. Also, these tracks were recorded before the sound treatment was added to my studio.

All right. Time to update my contribution with the addition of my workplace. Not exactly "my" studio, but it's still "my studio."

I work for a public radio station that runs a performing arts studio. We have live shows there, all of which we record, and we also record material for the station - sans audience. We're pretty low budget, but I think we've got it where it counts.

Here we go. First, the live room. The building used to be a bank. We'd like a little more treatment in here, and nicer colors, but someone donated a lot of money to pick these gawd-awful colors, so we put up with it. Forgive the bad picture. It's a chore to turn on the good lights.

The live room is pictured "the long way." We also can place the stage on the right side of the room in the picture. There are floor pockets so that we can place our input boxes and FOH console in either orientation.

Here's the FOH console. We use two. One for recording, and one for the house. This is the A&H 24-channel for the house. It's in a hallway right now.

...And here's the rack underneath. I'm currently missing my fx unit, as the one we use for recording is on the fritz, so we moved it for a live broadcast we did recently. The dbx comps on the left are great. The Behringers go unused, at least by me. EQs are for the house and the four monitor mixes.

Here's a good contradiction: I used to work in a bigger house with a $1 million installed system and a teeny little mic collection. We were always having to rent stuff. Here, we've got speakers on sticks, and more quality mics than we can use.

Beta 87s, A and C models. We only really use the Cs:

Beta 58s, SM58s, SM57s, and some AKG 451s. Some are out on location.

AT 4033s, and AKG 414s. We've got a bunch more 414s, and a couple more 4033s that are installed as audience response mics.

More 414s (these are '70s vintage), Sennheiser 421s, and SM81s. Again, some are out.

Here's the little cart we haul the mics around in. Makes life very easy. The bottom drawer is full of shock mounts, clips, and Whirlwind IMP DIs. Another contradiction - many nice mics, many cheap DIs. Note the radio time clock on top. Useful for live broadcasts.

We're a radio station, so we've got more RE20s than I can count. Several are out. Note that the ones in the boxes have never been unwrapped...

Upstairs in storage, we've got a bunch of what are probably great EV mics that get used occasionally in field kits. In fact, we've got more of them that are in field kits that go out with our news crews all the time. These are RE16s, RE55s, and an RE11.

Here's a drawer in the storage cabinet in the control room. I don't think anyone has ever used these 421s for anything, and they're probably from the early 80s.

Seeing as how our building used to be a bank, why not make the vault into the green room?

...And if we're gonna do that, why remove the vault door? Many famous people have stood around staring at this thing when they should have been loading in.

Our Yamaha Baby Grand. Nothing to write home about, but some pretty accomplished fingers have tickled these ivories.

Lastly, here's the control room. It used to be the bank manager's office. Pretty budget here. Note the Mackie HD recorder. We record redundantly on that and the cubase PC you see here. The recording board is a Soundcraft Ghost, which serves us very, very, well. Great mic pres on that thing. The green box on top of the rack is the ISDN line we use to connect with master control when we do live broadcasts. The Soundcraft is in front of the window that overlooks the live room, but we have to stand up to actually see the stage or floor from there.

the crowning touch, no doubt!

not much has changed in the Woodshed except my attitude — less frantic rookie jitters and much more laid-back. in the year and a half since i built the Shed, i've produced 15 tunes that don't suck too bad ... put em on a CD to give friends and family for Christmas.

i've been doing some remodelling out in the garage to increase my recording space...
the flooring is done, an' it's getting close....i'm sorting out the best acoustic room treatment(s) with the good folks at www.auralex.com, and once that's completed all that's left is to configure the equipment placement and get on with it....
i'm pretty jazzed !

1st pic is a few weeks ago when i'd finished the framing, 2nd pic is last weekend, just after the flooring was done...

Looking great - I love the wood ...

With all due respect to the folks in foamworld, do yourself a favor and also look into rockwool based acoustic absorption products.

WOW !!!

You guys are serious about this, aren't ya ?!!!

The second bedroom in my apartment is spare, so . . .

studio.jpg

No, seriously, . . . that's it.
An SM57 and a Legacy Axis 6 LD Condenser into a Lexicon Lambda interface and into my iMac.

Sounds ok for the basic ideas/songwriting type stuff I'm trying to do.
(I actually have a bit of an addictive personality, and years ago I was so far into the technology of sound that I forgot about the music!!! - I try to keep things simple now!)

No midi controller????

My goal is to have my room looking the the deck of the Starship Enterprise or close to something like Octonic's setup. Another 10 years and I might be there.

I have noticed a disturbing lack of Lava Lamps in recent posts.

I've been waiting for a good vintage one to come up - The new ones don't sound nearly as good . . .

"No midi controller???"

Stu, I wouldn't know what midi was if ya showed me a bag full of it...

It's the knob between the bass and the treble. Don't you Aussies know anything?

If you replace the cord on the new lava lamps with a cloth one it almost makes it sound vintage.

Smaller than a schooner, bigger than a pony.

Actually 'Bag Full Of Midi' sounds like an Aussie pub rock band.
They could play the Annandale Hotel, on a Tuesday.
Early.
