Audio Technica AT2020 for amplifiers

I searched in the forum and couldn't find anything directly answering, or people telling their experiences with the AT2020 on amplifiers. So does it work well on amplifiers? I understand that its a condenser microphone, and will be different than a dynamic microphone.

I ask because I know the quality that the AT2020 can get on vocals and acoustic, which are also things I would like to record with high quality. My favorite small artist uses an AT2020, and the quality she is able to record at inside her house is astonishing.

I would not use this in a live situation obviously.

It's a good mic. I have two of them. They're sturdy, well made mics. Can take a lot of SPL. The diaphragm is a little over a half inch, which if you're gonna be a stickler, is really a small diaphragm in a LDC case. When most people think LDC, they're looking for a one inch diaphragm. But...it does deliver good sound. That's what we're after, right?

Does it do close mic'ing well? Those seem like a good buy.

As I am new to a lot of the recording lingo, would you mind defingin LDC and SPL for me? I'm guessing SPL has to do with sound pressure level, or something like that.

Does anybody have a preference between the at2020 and the at2035?

The ATs seem to follow that you get what you pay for. Not all companies can say that. The higher up the chain you go generally the better the mic is. So yeah, the 35 is better than the 20......but only if it works better in your situation. My Red is no c12 but it's better for me because I own it.

I used to have a few of the old design AT4033's and swore by them for just about everything. Vocals, guitar cabs, piano, drum overheads or tom mics (be careful placing so the drummer doesn't whack them...). I traded out a bunch of stuff years ago and got rid of them for some other gear that eventually went by the wayside as well. A few years back I tried one of the new reissues and it just didn't have the same versatility and sound. Don't know what it is, maybe I just got one that wasn't quite up to spec, but the old ones are magic.

Yeah, the older ones are better. Hmmm, when's the last time a guitar player said that I wonder? When you get to the 4 series that's a different animal. Those of you that I've posted with before know that a used 4033 is one mic I always highly recommend when somebody asks about a condenser under $300.

Yeah. I use it on the kick a lot. The smaller diaphragm doesn't have that LDC "collapsing" sound when SPL is high.

Wow, very cool. I guess I need one now. Let's see, when is my birthday.....

Just looked it up. IT'S A HUNDRED BUCKS? Wow. Now, I did have a Perception a few years back. It really sucked and it was a 200. I'm assuming these are better?

I ordered the at2020 and should be here today or tomorrow, I'll let you know what I think. Would you like a sound clip of it picking up an amp?

If you're talking to me YES. I was looking at a KM 184 but no more than I need one I hate to spend that much. The Chameleon and one of the small Mojaves look good but the one I want is the Mercenary km69.

Cool, guys. Wife bought me a brand new 57 for Christmas. First new 57 I've had since I think '77. And this is the same price.

Ben's rule: sounds good = is good.

I've not gotten a whole heck of a lot of use out of the few SDCs I own on guitar, but that doesn't mean they're not useful for sounds that are different than what I'm after. I just tend to get big sound faster out of my SM57 or Sennheiser 906e.

If you're recording to a computer, find some good eq plugins, maybe roll off a little of the Chinese SDC high end peak, and then make some magic happen! If at first it doesn't sound like you want it to, then move it!

I remember that one, and it's become a watchword for me.

I missed out on a few 2020's just the other day at a store closing. Had demo models for $40. Should've picked one up.

I have an AT3035 and wouldn't hesitate to record electric guitar with it. The 30 Series was the predecessor to the 20 Series. The 30's were Japanese and I believe the 20's are Chinese but the same or similar microphones.

methinks Ben may have some copyright infringement going on.
