I believe the question is moot now that Logic Express got discontinued and Logic Pro got knocked down to $199 last year (which was the price of Express).
Back when I was particularly familiar (say, '06-07-ish), I recall the differences were that Express was limited to a smaller number of tracks (24? 36? maybe 48?) whereas Pro was 255. Express was stereo-only; Pro could handle surround. Express didn't support most (possibly any?) external control surfaces. There were some other more esoteric things that Express didn't support but were of highly specialized use. Also the number of software instruments and plugins/effects was much lower with Express. |

Currently, Logic is being offered as a download only product (but again with the caveat that old, boxed stock may be available). The current version doesn't come with mainstage etc - but is $200 instead of $500 or whatever it was before. Express didn't come with as many loops/samples as its bigger brother, and also had fewer instruments (the electric piano and the Hammondish organ ones), and also has a few less built-in plugins (it doesn't have the Space designer reverb, linear phase eq, mastering limiter - a few others). There may be a few other little differences - I'm on Express, and sometimes the markers don't work as they supposedly should. Also, Express is 32 bit, while there's a workaround in the big brother to use 64 bit stuff. As far as I know, the basic recording and editing functions are identical. Cheers, Geoff

Logic Pro has more bells and whistles than Express. Whether you need them or not that is up to you but most of the time when someone uses a "lite" version of a DAW they sure enough run into a situation where it is insuffcient for what they want to do
You will have a hard time finding limitations with Logic Pro so if you can swing the $200 and your computer can handle the requirements then go for that. As the others have said Logic Express is no longer available and Logic is now available as a download only via the App Store. Which is a good indication that Logic 10 is coming. Of course you could always just stick with Garage Band if you really just want to make demos and such. But even Garage Band is pretty good for more eleborate productions. |

Here's Apple's comprehensive breakdown: Pro vs. Express
Since making the transition, I've found Space Designer an awesome tool — the presets are sometimes a little over-the-top, but by tweaking them you can get what you want quickly, though it's important not to lay it on too thick. I've experimented with the non-preset Multipressor and could see it be useful as soon as I get a handle on it, and the Adaptive Limiter is pretty cool too. The additional instruments and loops (20,000 vs 1,200) are a great asset ... I don't use loops much anymore, but when I need a snippet for a certain part, I can usually find something tweakable that fits my needs. But as said, it's moot now unless you find a bargain on an old copy of Express.

My buddy uses the full version but I'm not sure of the differences. If it's anything like cubase LE and the full version the sound engine is, I'm going to talk technical for a minute so try to stay with me......better. It's like going from yeah that sounds ok to not even needing to talk about it because it's reproducing what you put there.
I'm guessing all DAWs are worth the asking price for what you buy over what you get free. Don't get me wrong. You can still make the high end version sound bad....well, not me of course....but I have seen it done. |

this thread starts with a misunderstanding and then has lots of great info... kudos to all the responses...
the new version is the way to go. just buy the parts you need, the price is much lower than before... the core technology is/was the same, it was all the other features etc... the full version was ALWAYS worth it...
