Presonus Studio One (new kid on the block)
I've been running an older version of Sonar(5) and it was time for an upgrade, i've always had glitches and funny bugs that always seemed to come along upset the apple cart in Sonar(5). Went to the local music software supplier and asked about upgrades to Sonar(didn't feel like learning a new Daw application), the guy behind the counter showed me the upgrades and then said......why on earth do you want to upgrade Sonar its had its day, download the demo of "Presonus Studio One"
Well i have to say i think he was right, although its early days and i'm just feeling my way around, it works great. I don't seem to have all the silly little glitches that always just seemed to come along when i'd just done/doing a recording and it works smooth and fast. So just thought i'd pass this on...... http://www.presonus.com/products/Sof...?SoftwareId=11 The demo is on there....... Anyone else using Studio One? Rob(uk) |

I am new to digital recording, but SP One is my new standard for comparison. I think these guys are the real deal and combined with eventual product maturity and adding a few "essential" processes, this will be the new darling and standard in due time.
SP One and the Presonus interfaces, tube pre's and mixers are a dynamic combo for future success, I believe.

Presonus is pretty good. This got a good review in Tape Op. No reason not to like it. The problem is that it's so close in price to Cubase. I'd probably go with Cubase unless I got a piece that came with this for free. Well, I did go with Cubase but that was some years ago. I know a few of the pieces now come with the lite version (Artist) instead of cubase LE.

Studio One looks really impressive to me. It looks really feature rich. I would like to give it a try but I just can't turn my back on Sonar. I know the program inside and out and it would be hard to break the bond.
Not sure if this is accurate but I thought I read somewhere that some of the programmers for Studio One used to work for Steinberg on Cubase. |

I've run the Presonus demo most of today and i'm amazed how quickly i've grabbed the basics and have been up and running. I did my first trial recording within 10 minutes of down loading the demo, very smooth and fast compared to Sonar 5. I know Sonar 5 inside out but it has a bug where once in a while the prog goes nuts and all the sliders and settings move about on their own
Looks like Presonus here i come, i want to make music not play around with computers...... I must say perhaps not a fair trial as Sonar 5 is now a few years old.. I guess time will tell... Rob |

Sorry for the off topic. I never tried 5. Went from 4 to 7. I know if midi devices are transmitting midi cc messages (program control change messages), these can affect sliders, and rotaries. Just curious. |

No theres no midi devices connected when it happens, its a weird problem the whole video display takes off the tracks start jumping up and down on the screen and if you have a plugin open at the time all the controls keep jumping around at 100 mph. You can't even catch the tracks on the screen with the mouse pointer, its driven me nuts at times. Yet another day it works o.k. i mailed Cakewalk about it about 20 times when i first purchased it but they never replied, a guy on the Sonar forums told me it was a known bug. I used Sonar 4 before 5 and there was never a problem on the same machine.
I downloaded the Presonus demo on an old P4 machine that Sonar will hardly run on and it works great with quite a few instances of Perfect space loaded, so it looks as if the Audio engine in the Presonus is a lot more streamlined and less cpu hungry. Addition.....well i've been running the demo for a couple of days now and i think this is a brilliant piece of recording software, just doesn't seem right when everything works as it should. That comes from a guy who ponders on things for months before diving in and buying anything, but i'll have the full version next week Rob Last edited by Robkay; June 5th, 2010 at 06:32 AM. |
