Small condensers arrived from MF

And yes they are small ! CAD model CM217

MF sent two mics and whoaa!! 5 / 20ft mic cords ! The deal was 1 free..they sent 5...

$42 shipped, two mics, 5 cords...

This was a 2 for 1 blowout sale with 1 free 20 ft cord...plus the year end 15% savings coupon.

After a quick test they appear to be ok, they are clean and bright, they have a 10DB pad switch for total gain reduction and a 200HZ roll off switch as well.

The mic clips have the insert for the small screw terminal as well as the standard mic stand mount. We will use them next week for the drum kit overheads and maybe both for acoustic guitar, so we will see...I'm not really expecting much but I am expecting something !

An MF flyer came to the house yesterday, these mics were back to $59 each..I guess that implies that the sale has ended...so has 2009..!

They will be good for overheads on the cybmals. Use the 200Hz roll off to reduce the low end rumble. They will get all that shimmer. Try one up close on the high-hat. You could do the underside/upward faceing idea on the ride cybmal too.

And remember to run them at the full phantom power they need. some of the low line mixers run a lower voltage so check the owners manual to see what the best operating range they need.

I believe my mixers and preamps are preset at 48V Phantom power, I didn't even know that could be changed . Is it common to be able to select Phantom Power settings ?

Yes. Some ribbon mics can be harmed by phantom power. Even for mics that aren't it's probably good to have PP off when plugging and unplugging. Plug the mic in, then engage PP, then engage the pre IMO.

Yes I know about the PP being on or off but I am asking is it common to be able to adjust the PP level ? I believe mine are fixed at 48V or at least that's what the manuals state on all of my boards and preamps.

The response above implies that some PP voltages are not "fixed" and can be selected or adjusted, ...I'm in the dark on this...

I'm talking the difference between some pro audio grade equipment grades. There are MI(Musical Instrument grade) and PA(Pro Audio grade), some lower model mixers run a global Phantom power of less than 48volts. While a PA grade(Allen & Heath,Souncraft,Midas,Yamaha) will have selectable Phantom power in groups of channels or individual channels, and run at the required 48volts.

ok, that makes sense.

I did a short recording test with these mics over the past weekend with the Acoustic guitar ,(1968 Guild D35) Direct to my Yamaha recorder, no preamp. Obviously they were best with the 200HZ roll off to get rid of the "boom" but they gave a nice clear crisp overall sound. The gain seemed a tad less then other mics that I have but that is not an issue . Overall I think these mics will add some value to my small collection, I will certainly use them for Acoustic Instruments and overheads and will feed them through a preamp as well.

For $42 ( 2 mics) along with 5 cables I doubt there will be much complaining ! MF has them back to $59 each now.
