H4N - Does it do it all, interface, direct and field recording? (how well?)
I do not have an audio recorder and in looking into them, the Zoom H4N stands out a good one to consider starting with because, for a reasonable price:
1) it does a nice job as a stand alone recorder. The H2 does the same thing for a hundred dollars less, but the H4N also; 2) has 2 XLR inputs and will function as a USB audio interface. Does this mean I could mic my amp (e.g., SM57) and record direct to PC? How might this compare with a dedicated interface/mic-pre (the $200 type)?; and 3) it accepts a 1/4" guitar cord for direct recording (like a Pod I suppose). This is not something that appeals to me though maybe it should. Anyone have experience using it as an interface (#2 or 3 above)? Plenty have already stated that it does a decent job as a stand alone field recorder. Thanks. |

I have the older H4 which I've had for a couple of years and would say that, if you've got no other recording gear, then one of these gadgets is a fantastic way to get into recording.
I've used it for all the ways you're asking about and it's a fantasticly easy thing to operate. I'm particularly fond of using its built in mics for making simple acoustic guitar/vocal demos but as a USB interface it's also easy to operate.

Thanks for the info. BTW, the H4N comes with a lite version of Cubase (Cubase LE - though I understand it is a little buggy) which also might make it a good way to get into desktop recording.
Do you know if it works reasonably well with electric guitar? Quote:
