What I hope is a simple question

Hi, I'm completely new to this, and have a question: What I'd like to do is be able to lay down a guitar track, and then be able to play over it, both through my amp. I'm a hobbyist and would just like to be able to play both guitar parts. Is this possible, and what would be the best method? I won't be singing or laying down other instruments, just guitar. Any help would be great!

the simplest thing for that task would probably be a looper, but i gotta warn you — recording is addictive and you may end up wanting to take it further than that.

I'd go with a looper too as a first choice. Second maybe a small portable digital multitrack recorder something with just a few channels, nothing too over the top.

Ya recording is very addictive. What a great hobby it has turned out to be for me. Hard to know when to say stop though with all these gizmos and gadgets around today.

I recently picked up the Boss Rc 20xl loop pedal and it allows me to add a guitar progression and then I play on top on that and continue to add and save to it. It has more features than that, but that's where am at now.

Like the others mentioned about recording - now I need to figure out to how save the stuff to a computer. Any suggestions? I'm using Linux for an OS.

If you've got a Mac and garage band it's very easy.

For practice I put down a simple software drum track, then record a bass line on the second track, I play those though one amp and play guitar on though another amp.

before you know it you'll be gigging with me and Papa Joe!

If you've got a PC someone will suggest other software.
