Preamp Nominal Level

Hi @ All!

I have an old Marshall 9000 tube preamp that I want to use for recording vocals and guitars on my PC. I want to connect the two Master Outputs of the preamp with the Line-In socket of the Soundcard. The preamp has a switch at the back offering three settings for the so-called "Nominal Level":
+4dB , -10dB and -20dB. Which setting is the right one for this type of Harddisk-Recording? I would appreciate it much if you could help me because I don`t want to blow up the Soundcard.

Greetings,
HappyTelecaster

i would start with -10dB and see how that works. i don't think you'll be in danger of blowing up your soundcard.

What kind of soundcard? Most pro-sumer grade uints run at -10dB. +4dB is where the real pro stuff runs - very hot. Never heard of -20dB as a preamp out level - I guess you could consider that a padded output.

It`s not even a pro-sumer card. It`s just what came along with the PC, some Terratec 5.1 Surroundthing - very cheapo but for rough sketches of my work that`ll do. Thanks for your tips guys .
