wow, that's a pretty broad question. what are you starting with? Mac or PC? what's your processor/RAM situation? what are your recording goals — just for fun, demos, albums? if you could describe your situation a little, it'd be easier for folks to chime in.

I agree with Woodman... some more parameters would be helpful.

I was in your boat recently, and I can tell you what I did. When I started I had my teles, a good desktop computer I built, and an amp (haven't use that for recording yet). Here is what I ended up buying or downloading.

Line 6 Toneport UX2

Reaper

JamStix

MXL 990 Condensor mic

KRK Rokit 8

SX p Bass

This gives me pretty much everything I need. Not even close to professional, but amazing for the modest amount I spent. Oh... a lot of this stuff I bought from Musicians Friend's Scratch and Dent area.

OK sorry about the broad scope of my request. I just want to have some fun. I have almost the same set-up as
Wisconsinstrings started with. Also I was thinking of the line 6 toneport ux2 , or maybe apod?

Musician's friend blows out Toneports from time to time. I got one with the Gold bundle about a year ago and have been having great results with it.

I would take a look at StealthPedal by IK-
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/stealthpedal/features/

It is a high-quality recording interface, comes with some awesome Amp modeling software (AmpliTube 2 Live, AmpliTube Metal), some recording software, and you can actually use it to control your software pedals. That to me is the killer app of the whole thing.

+1

I cant speak on behalf of the stealth pedal.. However I own Amplitube (2, Fender, Hendrix, Ampeg) and can honestly say that the quality of the software is mind blowing. You can get a free 10 day trial (full functionailty) from the IK multimedia website and unlock at any time.. I would pair this with VST compatible recording software such as Mixcraft 4 (my own personal preference).

Is there a windows product that is as simple and friendly as garageband? Drums, effects and all that. That's all I need, but don't have the cash for a mac (although I would love one). I do have an M Audio fast track.

I am a big fan of Riffworks. There is a free version that you can try out-

http://www.sonomawireworks.com/T4/

It is pretty much made for the guy who just wants to make music, not turn knobs.

As lots of people have mentioned, there are countless options on this front. I've found that it all starts with having good sounding gear to record and good speakers to hear your playback accurately. You should be able to craigslist or ebay a pair of monitors pretty cheap. I picked up the m-audio bx5a's at a pawn shop for $100 for the pair and they sound AWESOME! The most important thing to remember about shopping for budget monitors is that they don't have to be super loud, they just have to be well balanced and clear. You can take a cd you're really familiar with to most music stores and side by side pairs of monitors to see which you like best, then go find them elsewhere for cheaper. I have a few interfaces, all m-audio. The a/d converters are really good on all of them and they're all pretty affordable. I also invested in a good mic (sennheiser e935 dynamic cardiod) for the vocals. Next buy may be an sm57 to mic my marshall cab and that's about it as far as gear goes. When it comes to software you can end up spending a lot of money. It's unfortunate that people downloading programs on bit torrent drive the price up for those of us who actually buy the stuff... but you can choose your side of that argument and explore your options at your discretion.

I would seriously take a look at StealthPedal-it comes with recording software, modeling, great preamps, etc. It is the total package.

Toneport UX has mic input, UX2 has phantom power as well. So yes, and it works very well... For the other pods, check out the website...
