iPod recording mic: Blue Microphones "Mikey"?

Anyone try this yet?

http://bluemic.com/mikey/

I already have the iPod. Wondering if this might be a good way to capture rehearsals, etc.

Looks like a really cool idea -

I wonder about the quality of the sound file though.

I have a Belkin device that basically has the same features, minus the adjustable gain control (it has an autogain button). I using for recording in-person interviews. The sound quality is great for what it is, but it does pick up a little noise from the Ipod hard drive.

If you decide to buy the Blue Mic, make sure it's compatible with your Ipod. For isntance, I have a 160gb Ipod, and I don't believe the Blue Mic would be compatible with it. As a matter of fact, with each Ipod I've purchased, I've had to by a new mic. Last time I checked, there is no mic that is compatible with it, strictly speaking, because the Ipod doesn't auto initialize the recording function when the mic is plugged in. Thanks, Apple!

So as a follow up to this post I started - I picked up a Mikey a couple months ago. It works, and it sounds good, but it can't handle even a living room-volume band practice without distorting, and this is with the mic level padded down as far as it will go.

I've also learned that not one single iPhone/iPod Touch recording app will accommodate input gain adjustment, because apparently that feature of the iPhone/iPod OS is not accessible to third party developers.

Bummer. Looks like I'm gonna sell this and get a Zoom H2.

iPod recording

The iPod can make CD quality recordings, but it's important to get the right set up. It doesn't have to be expensive. The route I took was a Griffin iTalk (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italk) pro with an 1/8 jack that I connect to stereo mic. The important thing is to get the mic isolated from the hard drive so that it doesn't pick up unwanted sounds. I rigged a pole on a tripod and mounted the stereo mic about 7 feet off the ground and got some very nice live recordings. I sometimes used the built-in mic on the iTalk if I was just recording a practice session. This really came in handy for remembering how we had worked out specific arrangements.
