gator, do you have your heart set on a standalone recorder rather than a computer DAW?

I have a dpoo4 4 track that works great for simple recording, it even has built in mics. Probably not the best for more detailed, finished work (I recently upgraded to the Korg D888), but good for laying stuff down to play over. Very quick and easy to use, and relatively cheap.

I would actually look again at the computer, and something like Riffworks.
http://www.sonomawireworks.com It is made to be just stupidly simple, and there is even a free 4 track version with a 5th track for drums. You don't have to be good with computers, they really make it simple for the people who aren't rocket scientists. :) |

Being "invested" in both worlds I would say that for simplicity and ease of use you cannot beat the small 8 tracks, Boss, Tascam etc, and the price is very attractive too.
I have a Boss BR8, a Yamaha AW2816 and a PC setup with Cakewalk Sonar. If I didn't have a mind full of big projects I probably would not have come to the PC setup, but now that I am already here , oh well, I like it, I use it. If simple , inexpensive and small is the focus, the Tascam is a nice machine, just be sure you can USB backup files both directions. . t

Cakewalk/Sonar have two new units that work as stand alone recorders or as interfaces for DAWs.
One's pretty pricey-- One's a bit more affordable-- I know nothing about them other than the ad copy. |
