Need home recording gear... what to buy...

I want to get some not super expensive home recording gear just to mess around with, nothing that's going to break my wallet. As well I'm additionally looking for something small with a built in mic that I can take on the road with me that doesn't sound terrible. Any suggestions please? :O

the first part depends on what kind of computer you have ... if you're on Mac, i'd say GarageBand, hands down. don't know much about the PC world, though.

as for a portable with built-in mikes, the Zoom H2 looks mighty attractive. i know some folks who've gotten good results from them, and a lot of the guys on this forum think highly of the Zoom line.

Plenty of decent condenser mics around $100 out there. That's one thing I'd get.

Some sort of preamp/computer interface-again, a lot of options out there, as Woodman points out, a lot depends on what kind of computer rig you have right now. Lots of times, there will be bundled software as well-just check to make sure your machine is up to the task of running it.

You might already have a bunch of the other things you need already at hand-decent mic and instrument cables, sound processing gear (reverbs, compressors, and the like) and some decent dynamic mics like a Shure SM-57 (I always have 2 of them handy!).

What else you need depends on how adventurous you want to get...

this is kinda wide open.

What is your budget ? under $500 or over $1000 ?

What is your goal ? Track by yourself or record an entire band with a drum kit ?

Do you have recording experience or is this your first time in the fire ?

You can spend $199 on a very small and portable 4 track Boss Micro BR and maybe that will fill your need. It even has a small built in mic.

You can spend just over $500 and get a Tascam 24 track standalone workstation. For my money this is the best under $1000 workstation out there.

OR you can build a home PC based system where each week it is possible to spend more money and add components.

some more information would be very helpful

thanks

I guess I wasn't very specific about this haha... Sorry. I run a PC and I'm looking to spend like a couple hundreds bucks. I'd mainly be using it for recording guitar and vocal tracks but I would like to be able to record a drum kit later on. I've got really no expirence recording anything so I'm new to this....

Todays's SDOTD: MXL V63M Condenser ... a decent vocal mic for 50 bux ... insane.

An excellent platform for modding, BTW. New capsule, a few new caps, maybe output tranny - bam, very nice mic.

I ordered one.
