I will be playing to acoustic guitar scratch tracks - but I understand what everybody is saying about the bass tracks being foundational. I will politely suggest that they might be done first. Good advice from everybody!

I don't want to start a long, lengthly discussion on religion and alcohol / drug use, but do many worship bands abstain from alcohol altogether? I'm Catholic and I've never felt that a few beer were inappropriate at a jam, etc.

I'm protestant - the church I grew up in preached against alcohol. Period. The one that I'm a member of now says you shouldn't be dependent on alcohol and you shouldn't get drunk. I never developed a taste for it anyway. (Got alcohol poisoning at my first party when I was 17 - cured me forever!) Don't think anybody will be getting their buzz on when we hit the studio.

I kind of do this myself. I get a drum loop going, lay down scratch guitar. Then I do bass. Then I send this to the drummer, he does his part and sends it back. Then I go back over it and do bass, guitar and vocal. I may do vocals somewhere int he middle as a place keeper but the final vocals will go on last.

I guess what I'm saying is you sure could do the way you described but since there is already a guitar on, I would see if you could either get the bass on before you or else go do your stuff quickly, get the bass on and then you go back and redo your parts. The other option is going in with the bass player. So you can certainly do it the way they want you to but I think there are a couple of better options if they will work with you. Just know that if they won't change things that you can get it done and just go do it.

Going in with the bass player would be a great idea if it's possible. It's a lot easier for most people to groove with another person than it is to groove with a pre-recorded track. Plus you'd have a creative partner for finding parts.

Thanks for all the tips, guys!

Well I had a blast in the studio! We did some stuff that I had practiced and then we wrote a LOT of parts right then and there - that was cool. The studio owner/engineer was very knowledgeable and helpful. Here's a couple of pics:
Me playing my partscaster:

Playing the lap steel (pedal steel sound with the homemade palm-pedal on there):

Our worship leader/producer and his '69 thinline RI / the engineer and all his knobs:

We actually recorded everything on the electrics from the control room. Our amps were in an isolation booth just around the corner. 10 hours total for 7 songs. The rest will be done later.

Thanks! That was the first guitar I ever made. I'll have to check with some people to see if I can post thier songs, but I will at least post the one I wrote - It's the only all-acoustic song on there. We recorded that one in one take, live with 2 acoustics and a singer. Our worship leader wanted that one to have a more "live" organic feel. I probably won't have anything to post until the album is done, but just maybe I can get a rough mix of something.

Yeah we had fun and everything went pretty smooth. I don't have anything from the studio but if you want to hear what the lap steel sounds like here's a link to a song I did at home with it.

I was just learning how to play it when I recorded this so it's a little pitchy in parts but still sounds good to me

Most importantly be in tune. That and get the "feel" of the song the feel in your emotional mindset to get it.
