I have an H2. It works fine. good sounding even for live band recording.... I bought a couple of extra cards. I don't use all the features... pretty much I use the 180 recording option and then just upload the file to my computer and edit from there.

I, too, have one of the H2 ZOOM recorders. -You'll hear/read a lot of technical comparison fighting and folks liking this and that..... but, I doubt you'll find a better unit for less $. I've used mine to upload old LP recordings (with a splitter stereo patch cord from a turntable) and also to upload from old cassettes from a walkman! But mostly, I use it for practices and performances by our little garage band. One set of batteries has provided, easily, 6-8 hours of recording. I'd like to have easier, larger controls on the unit itself, but, normally, I just let it roll, and then, on the computer, I edit out the garbage between the points of interest, and save what I want. Incredibly clear sound for a contained unit that- as we used to say in the old days "is the size of a pack of cigarettes." You can usually find a place to set it, on the included little tripod foot, but, if you want to get creative, the foot screws into a course thread 1/4 inch hole, so you can use standard camera mounts, or get an eye bolt and hang the unit anywhere.
My major shortcoming is that I'm only using a free AUDACITY download for editing, and I basically only chop up the recording into individual cuts, and adjust the volume level before saving the cuts. Better software would be even more amazing, I'm sure. For me, the H2 ZOOM has been a lot of fun. |

This always happens when I read these threads. Now I want one of these! Anyone have any live recordings of their band using one of these that we might listen to?

mud,
the recordings that I net are pretty good. I am lukewarm on the interface and use the buttons and menus as little as I have to... it was designed by people who don't understand human interfaces... but, instead of being pissy about it.... I have the the recording part down... when I get home, I connect it to my computer, drag the file over, clear the folders.... and edit away in either quicktime pro, logic or garageband (it is just a wav file) and I am very happy with that process.... I am very careful with gear and rarely have it break... but the grill on the mic is the stoutest part of this device... the rest is very light plastic.... to its credit... great recordings! long battery life.. accepts normal media for memory... so, it is worth buying. I wish I loved it though.

Joefish, have you used the H4?
I tested it... it is a lot of menus to get that to work correctly... I helped a friend get his going... and we could not get the board input plus the microphones to work simultaneously which his band needed as they don't mic everything.... it does have a little recorder/mixer but, man, torture for me. I think if I were going that route, I'd just use my laptop and a capture device like I use in the studio... enough screen space to see everything.

oh man, you are in for a disappointment! That stuff is tactile and fun and cool and...
you'll like your H2... The H4 is ginchy... but, if you already have a DAW, I think overkill....

Gotcha, thanks, gb - there are a bunch of them out there, I want one, will decide soon which one ... we're not back at The River until the end of the month, so I have a little time to get one and get somewhat familiar with it.

I have the H2 and love it. It's absolutely perfect for capturing an idea or capturing a practice session. I have a horrible memory and this helps me a lot. If I set up right I can get pretty good sounds out of my acoustic with it. I don't mind the buttons and menus. I think it's pretty easy to use. But as some have said it is plastic so don't drop it on a concrete floor or anything. Somewhere I have seen you can get a clear case like they have for ipods and phones. I even use my to record directly into cubase or my Zoom digital recorder. This thing can do a lot.

The new one http://www.zzounds.com/item--ZOMH4N doesn't have that restriction and looks like a much better build quality I have been using it just as you describe as a capture device then I edit in something else. all that being said the H4 is awesome, but I would go for the new one for sure. |

It has high quality and is loaded with features. It is however a bit complicated and may be way more than you need. I had one and sold it. All I wanted to do was basically document what I was playing so I wouldn't forget it. If anyone has a better way to know, I would be very interested. I would also like to be able to find and get to older recordings quickly. Lots of features and very high quality aren't important or necessarily even desirable if it makes thinks take more time, going through menus etc.

Ginchy? I haven't heard that word in about 40 years! Isn't that what "Cookie", Edward Burns used to say on "77 Sunset Strip" to Efrem Zimbalist Jr? Last edited by bosstone; April 7th, 2009 at 06:58 PM. |

I got it from fonzy... but, you could be right. some words work for me so I keep using them.
another solution that I may entertain at some point.

Great tools but each have different purposes.
I have an Edirol R-1, and early one,( two years old ) and a Boss Micro BR. Both record in MP3 or Wave format, the Boss is guitar friendly and has 4 track recording features but has only a mono on board mic. It will record stereo with an external mic, I record every gig with this pocket sized thing using an ext. mic.( small sony) The Edirol R-1 or R-09 stereo wave/MP3 unit is not intended to to be a multi tracker and has more options for two tack stereo live recordings plus 2 on board mics. Now, think Zoom H2 and Zoom H4. Both are excellent but have different purposes. the H2 is ideal for just settin' it down and pushing the red button, as is the Edirol two trackers. They can both record extended time in both wave and MP3 modes using the on board mics. Now the Tascam GT-R1 is also a very good option, it can do all the live recording with an on board Stereo mic and you can play along and record later on. If multi tracking is also a feature you want then look at the Zoom H-4. Tascam GT-R1 and the Boss Micro Br. One thing I would recommend is to stay with a unit that has normal batteries such as AA or AAA. MAudio and others have units that have proprietary batteries. Both of my units can run over 5 hours on a pair of AA batteries. The small Sony Stereo mic ( which makes a huge difference ) ECM-MS907 can easily get 5 or 6 hours on a single AA battery. Generally when I record the gigs, I use the MP3128 setting , I record each set independently and the file size is about 40 meg there about. Today I only use the Edirol to record streaming music off the internet. At two years old it's already obsolete ! good luck t PS, one primary reason I use the Boss Micro BR to record gigs now is that I can plug it into my effects chain P/S. Boss is Boss. No batteries required.

O.K., so I was at a guy's house buying a Princeton Chorus the other day ... and he had a dead-mint M-Audio MicroTrack 48/96 with a couple extra memory cards for $150, so I took it - will report back as I get to recording our gigs with it.

A couple years back, I caught the M-Audio reps in town and they did a demo of that gadget. I can't even imagine an excuse to own one (for me), but it was really cool. Slick to use, and I think it did wav and mp3 files, and was $500.

Gig Recording Rig Update
O.K., I have rigged up a live recording dealio:
M-Audio MicroTrack 48/96 with external add-on mic, an Audio Technica AT822 Stereo Condenser Mic (the MT has a cute li'l plug-in stereo electret mic, but I wanted something with more "beef"). Mounted on a boom micstand with a cellphone holder & arm assembly from Ram Mounting Systems. One of the complaints about the MicroTrack is that it has no tripod or other type of mount connection. I agree - this sucks. The arrangement I found works very well, though. ![]() Recorded our outdoor trio gig at The River: ![]() Results - Sounds EXCELLENT! The M-Audio is a nice little unit - hooks up to my PC via USB for file dumps or streaming review. I disagree with some complaints I've seen online that it's "cheap" feeling, because it's plastic. It's very light - and I like that. It's put together well - as I don't plan on pounding nails with it, I don't forsee any issues. mud

as for the Zoom units, i've been tempted, but all the menu-diving turns me off (not ginchy!). i'm looking for the equivalent of the Radio Shack cassette player you can set up on a table at the bar, push Record, and listen to effortlessly at home after the gig. of course, in the digital age, i may be dreaming the impossible dream!

hahaha! bosstone, are you remembering the song "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb"? ... i think it was by Edd Byrnes (who played Kookie, the early-60s hipster on "77 Sunset Strip") and Connie Stevens. Kookie was sort of an LA proto-beatnik ... the big hook at the end of the song was, "Cause that's the kind of scene that I dig...baby, you're the ginchiest!"
Am I remembrering?...Heck, I had the 45. I watched that show every Friday night. I wonder what Stephanie Zimbalist is doing these days. |

that sounds good. the poor dude i watched setting one up to record, it was like he was programming a NASA space shot! (in fairness to him, it was brand new and his first time using it.)

I just bought a Zoom H2, haven't received it yet, Amazon! I checked out a lot of reviews, and you'll find some videos on Youtube about portable recorders. I went with the H2 for a couple of reasons, I need something totally portable, no add on mics, but the zoom may have this option, you'll need to check it out, seems to have a decent enough sound, again reviews on it from Youtube. I believe it takes AA batteries, ease of power, AA batteries readily available. It is made of plastic, but so is my little GE mini tape recorder, and I have dropped it many times and it isn't broke yet. 90 to 360 degree recording from built in mics, it has 4 mics. 24 bit recording. I believe, you may need to check this out. Also, it doesn't have a built in speaker for listening, but this is good in my opinion, because an internal speaker would cause more internal Hum from the magnet of the speaker, you can listen with ear phones or after transferring files over to another medium. For the money it seems to be decent enough. I am not endorsing this product, just giving my observations from checking out different units on the net, and you can transfer files over to your better equipment. No it ain't gonna make you a star at Carnegie Hall, but for the price it isn't gonna break the bank.

I should have come here first!
This looks like a good weekend to save a few beans with the sales, so I am down to the Zoom H-4/H-4n or the Tascam GT-R1. Has anyone used either to plug into and play through headphones or tried to upload files to learn new licks? Never tried this approach before, but I got this sweet b-bender 2 months ago and have a lot to learn. Thanks guys! |
