is the headphone out safe to use as a line out for recording?

i guess the post is just as it says... if an amp does not have a line out- is the headphone out safe to use? are they really the same?

You need to be really careful doing that, as a headphone out is a lot more powerful than a line out. It has to be strong enough to drive the speakers in your headphones.

Cheers, Tim

You just have to be careful with the volume control, if you crank it, it'll distort like crazy, and not in a good way...

Cheers, Tim

I have been using the headphone out jack of computers as line outs for many years with satisfactory results. I am not sure about other kinds of equipment, such as mixers and guitar amps.

You can do it without damage, but like Tim said, go easy on the volume. Ease into it.

I use the headphone out of my iPod into an RCA line input on our PA for break music. Works fine, just (again) start with the headphone volume control at minimum and increase slowly until you achieve the gain your recorder input needs without overdriving the input.
