possibly dumb reaper question

Can I somehow record directly from or into Reaper? Or, can I only import "media files" that have already been recorded with other software? I've been doing the latter, but it would be really swell if I could just record with reaper, right into the track where I want it go.

I don't see a menu option that would let me do this, but am probably overlooking something. Thanks

Yes, of course you can. How about a little more info Pango. Do you have an interface or a mixer?

I have both, but usually use a pre-amp/mixer.

By the way, I found the answer, and it was a dumb question. That big "R" at the far left of each track is for arming that particular track for R[ecording]. I clicked it, and recording right into Reaper is now seriously easy. You just tell Reaper where to park the file that it records for each track, bounce everything later, and so on.

Who would have thought? "R" for record???

I probably should add, in case anyone's thinking of doing what I'm doing, that on my laptop at least, the sound quality is significantly lower when I record direct vs. when I record first on a standalone multi-track and import that .wav file into Reaper. Either my multi (Boss) is really good, or my laptop's soundcard is really bad. Or both.

Is there a cheap solution to that? (I probably know the answer to that question, but wanted to ask.) The quality of the sound recorded directly, even if I run it through a bunch of gizmos/pedals beforehand, is seriously low-fidelity.

Thanks

Pango, check out the Line 6 Toneport. I got one, the two-channel deal, after getbent sang their praises here. He's right. A great gizmo for recording guitar tracks.
