Any Zoom H2/H4 Love?

Got an H2 yesterday.........didn't need the extra bells and whistles of the H4,because I have other digital workstations. This thing records very well and is clear as a bell!
Anyone else using one of these?

Yes, if you do a search on "H2" you will see a lot of love here and on other forums.

A great handy little piece of equipment.

Have a listen to our MySpace...

...and all our rehearsal tracks are captured with the H2 in a very large Church Hall.

We are the Lights Going Out band.

I've had the H2 for about two months now and so far am pretty pleased with it. Especially considering price and simplicity.

I've recorded 3 shows, all of which turned out quite listenable--one recorded at the Globe Theatre, Berlin MD was even excellent. Determining the proper mic gain setting is the most important variable. Hi setting is useless unless recording very quiet sources. Using a low setting is the safest bet.

Quality of recording, no surprise here, is dependent upon placement.

The H2 is a great tool. I use it at rehearsals quite often. Make sure you get a 4 gig card though.

For getting an inspiration down quickly and being able to read the manual as you go instead of "all in one go" :) these are amazing. Even if you overload them with too much sound the resultant recordings are not so bad - like a boombox, distorted, but not "death crackle". Still, knowing how to adjust the levels beforehand, is important.

No moving parts make me hope that these units will last for years, but the current state of consumer electronics tames that particular hope down a little.

I love it though, and would recommend it to anyone.

me too! it's one thing to preach to the band about what they should be doing, but once you provide them with indisputable audio evidence, they stop quibbling and start practicing!

I love mine, tried quite a few different configurations that were just too cumbersome to bother with, but I've done everything on my soundclick with my H4. Very easy to use!

I have an H2. It is okay... but just okay. I thought it would be better than it is though...

If I lost it. I wouldn't buy another..

Absolutely! It's always been de rigeur in the groups I've played in, even way back to my Drum Corps days, that we'd record our rehearsals on a boombox to see how we were doing.

small question about the H4 (and might be a stupid one) ..
Is it also possible to just use the H4 as a headphone amp, and are the amp presets any good or should i be looking at a pod x3 ?

Actually, it is a decent headphone amp. I haven't really spent much time with all of the presets, being that the Vox AC30 one is really awesome. I like the Bassman, and with a bass guitar there are other cool bass amps as well. Definitely the opposite of most multi effects processors. Instead of a gazillion sounds, none of which sound right, you'll find three or four you'll keep going back to. Analog pedals work well with the amp sims as well. I keep feeling like I shouldn't use it as a headphone amp, but hey, there's no moving parts to wear out, so what the heck!

I have an H4 and it is a pretty good unit. Has a little too many bells and whistles IMHO but when you set this thing up on a tridpod it picks up everything. Havent used the inputs on the back as I am just using it for recording practices. The Cubase LE software it comes is also pretty handy.

I personally would go with something along the lines of the POD.

Yea, I know this is an old thread, but I did get my Zoom H2 in the mail today. I am not endorsing any product, only giving my observations. First thing I did was drop it-it did not break. 2nd thing was tried to figure out how to use it-simple-read manual. 3rd thing i did was try it. it does very well on voice, low hiss. It picked up my flat top fender acoustic very well. Both voice and guitar-did well. I also had my fan running in background-I could barely tell it was running on recording. Haven't figured out all the stuff on it yet, it has lot for a little unit. I used headphones on it, did not play it through a bigger unit. My observations...Worth the Price for -162 bucks paid. I may change my mind later if it gives me any trouble.

bringing up this topics life again
I'm just curious, I have Zoom H4, and does anyone here knows how to record with H4's built in mics and with one external input- in this case shure SM57?
is this even possible? I mean, if it's possible to record with 2 tracks at once in 4-track mode then this should be too.

I don't think that options possible - unless the latest models have changed the set up options.

You either use the built in mics or the 2 inputs. I don't think you can mix that combination.

Well, I just got my new Zoom H2 in today, and I can attest to one thing about them: They ARE tough...

Here's the story - I had made my first quickie recording on it this afternoon - playing my acoustic guitar (I was pretty impressed with the sound of the H2 by the way), and set it down on the coffee table, and was handing the earbuds to my wife to listen to my first recording when she promptly stood up (for some unknown reason) with the earbuds in her ear, taking the H2 with her and it fell hard and fast straight to the tile floor. Of course it had to miss the rug under the coffee table by about one inch and hit the tile... So - WHAM!

It's still working. For now, anyway...

I think it's probably gonna be okay - I made a few more recordings just to check - but Honey, BE CAREFUL.....

ahh too bad. it would be really nice to record for example the amp with sm57 and put the zoom a bit away.

Couldn't you record one track with the amp/sm57 & then another track with the Zoom? I know it's not exactly what you needed but...

BTW, I have the first generation H4 & love it. It's amazing what this small piece of equipment will do.
