a major problem for a newbie

I tried to record with just the laptop.

I played some solo, and put on the effect and link the effects to the mic in with some cables. some notes sounded ugly.

I tried to play some chords and recorded it with the vista sound recorder (didn't feel like to download other programs yet and same program used as above) and when i played the record back, it was horrible. all I heard was that everything crush together. I can't really describe it. I think all I can say is ugly noise. (and I used very clearn sound on my effect.)

can someone tell me why? thanks!

Maybe you can try turning down the input volume. You are probably sending a signal that is too hot.

So from what I gather, this is your current set up.

Guitar --> Effects unit --> Mic In port of Vista equipped laptop.

While you may be able to use the Mic In port, I would suggest plugging into the green LINE IN port.

Then go to:

Control Panel > your sound cards audio monitor icon ie/ Realtek HD Audio Manager > click on the Line In tab > set as default device. Now lower your recording volume using the slider.

I would suggest downloading Audacity. It is a free download and very small.

G'luck and welcome to the wonderful world of PC recording.

thanks for the inputs, I'll test these tomorrow

my set up looks like this: Gutiar -> effects -> mic
but my laptop doesn't have a line in port

I think the the same thing happened to my friends' laptop.
I use the octave (lower) and record it on my friend's laptop for him to practice. the sound that comes out was rough.
