Amp Volume when mic'ing
Lots of advice on where to place the mic when recording thru an amp, but little about volume. If I turn my DRRI up to its sweet spot, does that affect the quality of what the mic picks up? Or do mics just pick up whatever comes out of the amp, regardless of volume?

with a good dynamic mike, you should be able to blast away without any tone degradation due to mike overdrive. i've had a lot of luck with the Sennheiser e609, but an SM57 or 58 will work just fine.

If you need to play stupid loud to get "your sound" just move the mic back from the grill a couple more inches so as not to distort the signal by smashing the capsule's diaphragm against the magnet.

I have those mics but haven't recorded from an amp yet.
Nothing crazy loud here, just get a natural ring that I like at a little higher volume, better than anything I can get with a pedal. Sounds like I'll be fine. If not, I'll back up 'em up a bit. Thanks |

If you can stand to be in the same room as your amp without wearing earplugs, you shouldn't have any trouble. SM57's can take alot of punishment before farting out.

true dat. the "sweet spot" on a DR isn't gonna blow anything up.
