Finally getting an SG - better late than never

I get these daily bargains e-mailed from Hello Music. Most are just a basic discount off the going price or discontinued models, but they threw up a Black EPI SG G400 for $249.00 with a first time buyer discount of an additional $20 off. $229 seems a good deal for a $349 guitar (MF's price). No tax and free shipping.

I've never had an SG, never even played an SG so here comes my chance. Not that I've disliked them, just liked Fenders and other Gibson's more. I'm looking forward to finally having one.

I have a worn brown epi g400... I LOVE it!!

It has great playability, great construction, and I love the short-scale neck. On the other hand, I really need to upgrade the pickups. They are not the worst ever, but a couple of Seymour Duncans would really make her sing.

Some of those Epi SGs are real nice. I got the one that came with a Maestro whammy; I like it a lot.

Pretty much the oposite of me. I'm fairly young and got a Gibson SG Special. I already knew I liked Fenders better, but I gave it a try. I ended up trading it for an 89 American Standard Tele. I guess I'm not a big SG fan. I have been GASing for a LP Junior Special though. I might pull the trigger on one of those.

Mine are just a touch too muddy (especially the neck), even by humbucker standards. I think they could be too 'hot'. The plan is to get some nice 59 PAFs. A minor thing could be getting a nice nut too. This one is a bit sticky. I'm sure I'll ruin it if I start playing around with files.

Congrats on that. I've been wanting to get an SG with P90's, but the Epi version has the wrap around bridge, and I want the independent bridge tail piece setup. Have to save up for the Gibby version.

Anyway...enjoy that guitar. I've picked up a couple and they are pretty nice.

I bought one of the Epiphone 1966 SGs. I now use it as my beater guitar (different tunings, let the kids play it, pick it up without washing my hands first, never change the strings...). Don't get me wrong here, there is nothing at all wrong with the guitar. It sounds real nice and plays real nice. The only thing wrong with it is that it isn't a Gibson. I should have just saved a few hundred dollars more and got the real deal Gibson SG which I always wanted.
You may feel the same way with your Epi SG. It's a nice SG, but it ain't a Gibson SG.

Here's my '66 Epi SG with my '66 Mustang. The '66 connection was the reason I bought the guitar.

I had a Gibson SG for 20 years and never really liked it. Turns out that telecasters suited me much better.

I used to have an SG standard from the 80's. Great playing neck. It carries some music with it that's for sure!

I had a Gibby SG Standard that I never really bonded with - because it was a real dog. There wasn't a single redeeming feature about that particular guitar and it put me off Gibsons for about ten years.

Last December I bought myself a brand new SG Classic and it won me back over to the dark side! I think that SGs really appeal to Tele-wielding guitarists - they share a basic simplicity of function.

I had an Gibson SG standard that I really liked, but in the end I sold it.
It remains one of my favorite guitars though, but preferably in the hands of someone else

It felt to big for me (one of the reasons I love my Music Man Axis guitars, nice and small, easy to wrap around so to speak) and was to expensive to be a case queen.

I may buy a second hand Epi SG400 one day to fool around with though if it's cheap enough. They're certainly nice enough guitars...

One thing I don't like though: to many damn knobs

You couldn't give me another set-neck guitar (unless it was luthier-made to my specs.) But, if you like it, that's all that matters in this instance. Enjoy.

I love SG's, but only as sculpture.
Can't keep one in tune, no matter how I set em up.

That's probably a bad setup on the specific guitar... if you take care of it, it'll shine! Give it a chance and you won't regret it! It would be a shame not to. :-)

I'm the same way. I've tried. Love the necks, love the look, they sound sweet as anything. Just can't keep'em in tune. I always attributed it to the neck getting stretched across my fat gut. Does that make sense? If I ever lose weight.....I'll try one again. I have always wanted a cherry red SG Jr.

I have a late 90's Epi SG that I put SD Phat Cats in and it's a great instrument, I also have an SG Les Paul (3 pup's) that I put Stew Mac Parsons Street HB's in and that guitar really sings...I definately like Epi's and SG's are way up on the list of keepers.

Congrats on the purchase and as long as we're sharing. I had a SG Standard from the mid to late 90's that I foolishly traded for an American Standard Tele. The Tele was one of the first Ash models. Loved that SG, ended up hating the Tele and got rid of it after a couple of months. I still miss that SG. I've never found one to replace it and kick myself when I think of it. I should probably post this story under the stupid purchase thread.
