I bought an '05 MIK Epiphone Les Paul '56 Goldtop for $300 last Friday... great condition, real pretty, plays good, but sounds meh. Dumb move on my part.

Bought a Gibson es135 copy off eBay. Didn't say Gibson or anything, but I convinced myself that a true hollow body with two pickups, binding and blue burst would still be a great guitar, even if it was only 139.99 with free shipping. Poured money into new hardware, pickups, and wiring. Know what I had after that? A guitar that still played like a cardboard box with strings. Sold it on CL to a guy that didn't even want to plug it into my amp, he didn't play it or really anything. Just gave me my money and left. I guess he figured a 100 buck guitar was a 100 buck guitar.

My Zoom B2.1u 3 years ago after buying my first bass. What a waste...that and more recently the Digitech Bad Monkey...It's not too bad but there's other offerings from Boss that sound a lot better.

the first guitar, that led to thousands of dollars of more over the years......JUST KIDDING.
but in all honesty my most embarrassing is probably my first one, an acoustic electric ibanez talman. really not the best guitar at all...

Mine would be trading my Mom's 20+ year old Epiphone acoustic (which sounded great, btw) for a distortion pedal. Which broke in less than a month. Hey, the 80's were a magical time that will hopefully never happen again. And I hope my Mom never reads this...

Yeah, the second time I bought a Gibson Bass. The guy needed the money and I must have been high or something. God I hated those things.

If you like everything else apart from the sound, a pup and/or electronics upgrade should fix it.

I bought a very beat-up Rickenbacker 330 just because it was from my birth year, 1992. Not only did I have endless problems with it due to the previous owner not looking after it very well, but I also realised that I'm just not the type of person who owns a Rickenbacker. I'm still trying to sell it.

A vintage banjolin. Inspired by David Grisman and possibly a fourth glass o wine.
It was like a musical instrument, but it wasn't one.

I bought a Charvel Tele cheap once. Looked really cool. Bound black body, maple neck. Felt nice, sounded great unplugged.
When I got it home, and took it out, it seemed during the trip home the fret ends all pretty much popped out really badly. When I tried to play it....it scratched my hands all to bits. Pickups sounded awful too. Had a tech try to fix it, but it was futile. I ended up trading it straight up for a MIM Strat. I was much happier. |

Back in the day I bought a Fender HM Strat and that thing was the biggest hunk of junk ever! It had these really nasty sounding Dimarzio pickups and a Khaler tremolo that took at least an hour to restring. That was the coolest guitar in the world the first two weeks I owned it, after that I couldn't get rid of it soon enough!
