Besides guitar, what are your other favorite instruments, and least favorite too
We all love our guitars. Besides guitars, what other instruments do you really enjoy listening to, or playing? And which musical instruments do you not particularly care for? I especially love songs that have the classic Hammond B3 Organ (with a Leslie speaker cabinet of course). And I also love songs that have a clarinet. The Hammond B3 is THE quintessential organ sound, full of tubes and richness, impossible to duplicate with a digital keyboard. And I really love old big band music that features the clarinet, ala Benny Goodman. The clarinet just sings to me like no other reed instrument can. Conversely I'm sorry but as soon as I hear a Xylaphone I'm changing the station. And I'm not too crazy about flutes either. And synthetic keyboards.. eek! Run!!! But hey thats just me. What are your other favorite, and least favorite, musical instruments?

I have to agree on the B3 Leslie combination.
About 41 years ago when I was a teen, a band practiced in our basement and a B3 and Leslie was one of the keyboards in use. Even today when I hear the unmistakable sound of that combination, my ears perk up. Wonderfully unique. Drums would be a favourite as well. I cycled through 4 or 5 kits in my life and do miss the one I sold this year as I exited playing drums. I would hope to get another kit someday but my arm really won't take it these days. I Love the sound of a good sax player for sure. I enjoy good bass as well |

Along with my guitars I'm enjoying my first fiddle. I got it for $40 with a case and a bow, and a couple of method books. I'm working on getting some bowing technique going here first. I'm excited to be taking my first lesson on tuesday with a local teacher.
Keys, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone, any string instrument really... I can't think of hardly any instruments played well that I don't enjoy. |

Favorites: Bass guitar. Drums. Brass. Organ. Vocals. In roughly that order.
Least favorite: Autotuner-processeed bleating by tone-deaf, arythmic weresheep, aka. popular radio music. (Sorry about insulting the world's sheep. Most actual sheep bleating is much kinder to the ears than that. It's just something about the emptiness of the eyes that made me think of these fine animals.) |

I also play bass and keyboard (mostly synth simulations on a computer and a midi controller) professionally and am working on playing drums again. I'm studynig piano so I can develop my execution on the keys. I'm buying a 4-string banjo from the same guy that hired me to play one years ago. I had recorded mandolin once but i'd like to have one so i could develop on playing in this tuning. I's prefer to have a mandola though. And a tenor guitar.
I'm into the idea that a musician should get any instrument and try to play it smoehow and then, if something comes out of it, try and study, play more and develop. My dream would be playing baritone sax but it's too expensive to start with. Bass clarinet would be great too. |

I like fiddling around with a Theremin. It's like a one string air guitar
Other than that I play piano and use a midi controller keyboard for backing tracks. It can be a poor substitute for real musicians but at least I don't have any arguments with band members |

Lots of them. To play I love piano and organ. I don't play horns or woodwinds, but love them in a band. I also love the sound of a big double bass....and really love lots of percussion.
Lately I've been playing a lot of ukulele. I find the sound of a good uke to be very soothing. I can't say that there are any that I dislike (except maybe Chinese Erhu). There are some that I'd say fall into the category of "played well = amazing, played badly = torture". In this category I'd put: Harmonica, accordion, bagpipes....and probably many more I can't think of. |

Does pedal steel count? It is a guitar but very different to the one I try to play. I love Booogie Woogie piano. And a fiddle or even a tin whistle can bang out rollicking good tunes.
Least favourite - marimbas. No idea what they are but they always seen to feature on records where the producer is trying just too hard to make it interesting.

ahh mate.. george zamfir is killer on pan flute... frikken legend...
though Acker Bilk has a style of his own on licorice stick... I've got an LP here somewhere with Acker and George on the same record.. swapping killer licks... it was one of those house jokes amongst a few of us when party conversation turned to legendary musicians... Oh yeh..George.. old georgie zamfir.. what, never heard of him?.. maaaaaate frikken legend.. played wih Acker Bilk,,, you've never heard of georgis zamfir?.. well better go and check a few of his LP's.... thats where kenny G got his chops. .. at the crossroads... on a dark stormy night where the neighbours couldn't hear him play...a lightning bolt turned his pan flute into a licorice stick.. and he saw Acker...

Really love string bass and cello, piano under the right hands,, same with drums. Very little tolerance for synth strings ("Let Me Be There" by Olivia N-J comes to mind), and please keep the tambourine to a minimum...

I'm a good mandolin player and an undistinguished button accordion player. I love playing mandolin, but it's pretty brutal on my hands so I don't play it very much. Someday I want to get a decent mandola (the same instrument, but bigger and tuned a fifith lower, like a viola). And the accordion is of course the coolest instrument ever.
Instruments I can't stand? Just one: Chapman stick. It's like a guitar for boring people. And for boring people with. |
